Hi Hatrack. This thread is mainly for people with Christian beliefs, but others can chime in, also. Not wanting to start any kind of debate, just following a thought. So here's the question...

Who knew Jesus? Who were his first followers? Do you think they recognized a divinity in him right away, or did it take time? Did they believe him to be the son of God when they knew him? Or was that concept something that came about after his death/resurrection? What do you think it was like to be one of his disciples, to actually live day-to-day *knowing* Jesus and interacting with, basically, a divine being? (If they knew it at all). Did they understand the gravity of his life and his teachings when they were with him?

I'm pretty sure even the Christian responses will be completely varied on that topic.

Matthew 16
Peter's Confession of Christ

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

I'm curious as to why you are asking this question.

Actually, reading the Gospel of Mark (the shortest and likely oldest of the 4 canonical Gospels), there's an almost laughable repition of the theme where the apostles don't really seem to "get it" regarding Jesus. Sure, they follow him around, and they say stuff like that quotation from Peter earlier, but then they just kind of blow it a few verses later and Jesus shows them someone who just met him for the first time and immediately figures things out.

The apostles seem kind of goofy at times.
