Some scientists have proposed that when a woman has a baby, she gets not just a son or a daughter, but a gift of cells that stays behind and protects her for the rest of her life. That's because a baby's cells linger in its mom's body for decades and -- like stem cells -- may help to repair damage when she gets sick. It's such an enticing idea that even the scientists who came up with the idea worry that it may be too beautiful to be true.

Babies' Cells Linger, May Protect Mothers

No worries about apron strings and scissors, now, eh? [Big Grin]

Like that Star Trek episode where they all turned into cavemen except for the pregnant nurse.

I did. Is it bad that I immediately knew the title?

It's Genesis from season seven of TNG.

O_o ...Star Trek had some of the strangest plotlines.

* * *

quote:
It's not a far-fetched idea. These cells may behave like those famous embryonic cells: They can turn themselves into any cell mom needs.

If she's got a bad heart, they can be healthy heart cells.

Bad lungs? No problem, they can be lung cells. Fetal cells may be the ultimate repairmen (or repairwomen).

Just curious, how would said cells get from Point A to Point B in the monter's body? Just throught the blood? Or are they already there, having developed while she was pregnant?

Wow, that's pretty cool. Next time your mother whips out the "I spent forty-seven hours in labor with you, and then you came out sideways playing a trombone . . . " guilt trip, there's the stem cells comeback.

The pregnant nurse? Lieutenant Ogawa, in genesis? She de-evolved. But they used her amniotic fluid to cure the crew. (They had to find her in the arboretum. She de-evolved along the primate line.)

C'mon -- it was NPR news, not Fox . . . doesn't that make a difference?

Yes, it was her baby (and Spot's kittens) who were normal that clued them in.

Funny how Spot was male for most of the show, but had kittens when it was convenient for the plot!

Had they mentioned the gender for Spot? I can't recall if Spot was ever called he or she.
