Hey all nurses out there:

My wife is looking for HIIPA (or whatever it is) approved clipboards - apparently with a flap you can use to cover the patient information. We looked online for an afternoon, and found one that will work, but isn't ideal. What have you seen in use out there?

The one we purchased is plastic, with the plastic hinge-things that tend to wear through and cause the entire thing to fall apart.

Like this?

Because I've bought similar at Office Depot.

I'll show that one to her Tante.

We've checked the office supply stores around here, and all we've come up with are the aluminum or plastic forms holders, which she says are too klunky/heavy. Of course, our local office supply places aren't numerous or well stocked.

And, for some reason, she likes the style a friend of hers found on clearance at Wal-Mart (there was only one, and no others have been found), that opens from the side. It just kind of surprised me how difficult it was to find options. I figured all nurses had to deal with this, and supply outfits would be all over it.

Well, I personally use a portfolio type thing, It has a pocket on one side for papers, pens and the like, and the other side holds a pad of paper. There is no clip. I don't love the clip, anyway. It always seems in my way.

One of my colleagues likes the clipboard style. Her privacy solution? Simple. Put a blank sheet on top of whatever is on the clip board. Or you could turn the top sheet over.

That's what they've been doing, but wanted something better. Kell bought some of the style she found (which I will try and look up the link when I get home) for her other charge nurses, just so they could try it out. Apparently they're in love with the clip.

The hospitals around here seem to go half and half-- half use cover sheets, and half order ones like the one Tante linked to in bulk. She has to buy her own supplies?

Carstens seems to make what you want-- lightweight durable side-opening clipboards, available in several colors. [Smile] Although they do have the "plastic hinge-thingies."

Saunders makes one in aluminum, but it's a little more expensive. Might be worth it, though.

(How did I find these? A google of "clipboards privacy covers". [Smile] You may well be able to find something even better, these were from the first 5 links.)

That's pretty close to what she bought. Saunders makes some that we use here in my office, but she doesn't like aluminum.

We googled a half dozen different descriptions, but finding a model she *likes* is the difficult part. We were googling based on the HIIPA privacy clipboards, and a few other things. I actually did put a decent amount of research in this before turning to the jatraqueros - just thought some of the nurses out there might have something incredibly cool that we didn't find.

Heck, I figured the "Nurses Station" magazine she gets might have something. They have emergency margarita mix, but not clipboards. [Razz]

Well, give us exact specs on what she wants, and we'll see what we can come up with. I look through all my mom's nursing mags and catalogues (she doesn't have the time), and I'll tell you if I see anything that suits her wishes exactly. [Smile]

Forgive a quick rant. But, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was supposed to be a simple piece of legslation which would allow persons with chronic ailments, or ill dependents, to be able to move to a new job without having to worry about losing insurance coverage. The privacy portion was simply to prevent discrimination in employment based on a potential cost to an employeers insurance plan. It has turned into a monster. If I had a penny for each dollar that has been spent on frivolous privacy compliance efforts, not dreamed of by the bill's sponsers, I could buy several smaller european nations.

Artemisia, If I could work out something to get you that penny per, would you give me one of the nations?

kq, just as soon as my wife makes up her mind (on any subject, for that matter) I'll be sure and post it. I was mostly wanting to start some dialogue about what others are using.

She's now talking about buying some different binders (which the hospital provides, but the nurses don't like). I just need to keep a steady supply of alcohol here, so she won't think about it when she's not at work.

This paperwork compliance is really driving her to drink, huh?

I don't know that I've ever met a nurse that had to be driven to drinking.

Last party I went to involving nurses, the poor barkeep had to keep running downstairs because he was running out of components for Amaretto Sours. I think he said he had to make 4 trips that night.

And my wife wasn't drinking that night [Eek!]

And that was tame compared to the normal nursing parties [Angst]

My husband had an argument with the hospital over HIPAA. He went down and asked for my admissions info so he could send some paperwork to our insurance company and the hospital clerks refused to give it to him because he wasn't the patient, and under HIPAA they supposedly couldn't give him the information because it violated my privacy.

At that time I was stuck in a semi-private room because they had me in the system as unemployed and uninsured and wouldn't put me in a private room until it was all straightened out. So my husband asked them if the patient's privacy was always honored there, and she said yes. He then said "Why do you still have semi-private rooms, then? Because my wife is stuck in a room with another patient who hears everything the doctor says to my wife."

The girl said "You know, that's an excellent point." [Roll Eyes]

Or maybe just a loud color? [Wink]

I've never seen a nurse have to buy her own clipboards before. My office has tons of free ones given by drug reps, btw.

Kelly gets pens from the reps. She's a pen-a-holic.

As far as I know, all the nurses at her hospital buy their own. I really don't keep track, I just know the nurses I know on Kell's floor buy their own.

My sister gets more drug rep gear working at a restaurant than my wife does at the hospital. Of course, the night shift may have something to do with it.

I couldn't agree with you more.

It's awful and I now find it very difficult to do my job. I need to be able to keep the line of communication open between the doctor I work for and the patient's other doctors. Too often I call another office and end up arguing with their staff over the specifics of "coordination of care." Someday I just know that because of HIPAA someone won't get the care they need all in the name of privacy.

HIPAA, like most inflexible bureaucratic rules systems, has some good ideas and some absolute silliness.

Like, I received HIPAA training while I was working in data for a primate research center associated (not physically connected) with a hospital.

Because, you know, you need to protect monkeys' privacy.

Edit- spelling

My favorite silly thing that I do to comply with HIPAA regulations is that when I fax something, I have to have a cover sheet. Because THAT makes the document undecipherable to anyone with prying eyes.

Lots of us buy our own.

Want to send me a free one? [Wink]

In fact, I've seen very few nurses with free ones, to tell you the truth. And I've worked both day shift and night shift.

I've gotten some really cool freebies from drug reps, etc., but no clipboards.

By the way, an update - Kell just got through her first shifts with the new clipboard, and loves it. So, apparently we jumped the gun already looking for a new one.

I swear, one day I'll get the link of where we bought hers.

Ela, my co-workers and I are getting a kick out of that site!

I would just love to see the looks on the reps faces if I were to drink out of one of those coffee mugs! I personally refuse to use drug pens but I cave everytime they bring lunch. I'm weak! The doctor I work for now loves the reps and it's digusting watching them kiss his butt on a daily basis.

At my old job they had lunch brought in EVERYDAY! I tried to resist but I found I quickly became an outcast at work.

With a cover sheet, if the papers were faxed in the right order the cover sheet will be covering any patient information. I would think it's a moot point as long as the fax is in a secure area, though.

I refused pens from a formula company recently when I was floated to pediatrics. It was a nice pen, but I'm a lactation consultant - I am not walking around with a formula company pen.

Heh, we had to revise all our wills, trusts and powers of attorney to include clauses allowing release of information as it pertained to determining whether someone was still fit to make their own decisions... whoda thunk that HIPAA would interfere with estate planning?
