From Neil Gaiman's Blog

The Movies

I will leave it to the reader to determine whether The Shire is romantic, bathetic, kitschy, or a combination of all of those.

Is it just my imagination or does the person narrating the first movie have a New Zealand accent? *laugh*

The entire site seems to be a mixture of writing in an "enchanted" style, and the total opposite- including problems in grammar! Especially Here

quote:
The old world charm of The Shire begins at the entrance. Our rustic gate house stands notice to all who enter that The Shire is a place like no other and a community separate from it surroundings in every way.

Hold the Phone....Jan 6th 2006
We are sorry to report that the City of Bend will not allow the building of this entry arch do to the fact the sewer also runs under it. Bummer, we are pondering the next entry...heh, maybe the "Two Towers"

O.o

Is "bummer" an old rustic English word too?

Well, the prices don't seem that bad.

But then, I live in L.A.

I've got to say I love the thatch roofs (though I'd like to know what they're acutally made of and how "green" it really is.) I think I might stick with real thatch if I were building a home lke that. The houses are a little... over the top some ways. But the area is gorgeous. I wonder how the kids who live there are going to feel about it when they grow up, though.

It looks gorgeous, but it's unbelievably expensive. And I thought all the rejection of the modern world in favor of the idyllic nineteenth century UK was a bit over the top.

From the video (paraphrase; it was something like this):

quote:
Mysterious hobbit holes: what are they for?
From an article posted on the website:

quote:
The hobbit holes will hold lawn mowers instead of diminutive, barefooted halflings from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but The Shire aims to bring some Old World styling and a fantasy setting to Bend's east side.
LOL!

Over the top, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure it will be lovely; I also suspect that no authentic, unruly English-style cottage gardens will be tolerated, despite all the talk on the website of encouraging individual artistic expression and so forth!

I'd much prefer actual hobbit holes.

I would be happy to live off the beaten path in my own hobbit house. I don't think I could handle living in a magical gated community fully of weirdos.

Haha.

If all the Hobbit holes were like Bag End sure. Though Bag End was extremely expensive by Hobbit standards to build.

I wouldn't mind retiring to a nice Hobbit hole somewhere...though I'd want a skylight, and maybe a deck on top of the hole...and a view of Lake Evendom.
