Hopefully TomDavidson, Fugu13, or someone else can help me.
I am toying with a 2003 server and ran into a problem and kinda fixed it, and it got me all sorts of confused.
I am at work on a NT4.0 Server. Our network uses to IP ranges: 205.xxx.xxx.xxx and 204.xxx.xxx.xxx. My 2003 server has a 205 ip address. The computer next to me (I am using 3 computers now--server, this comp, and an XP machine to test my server connections) has a 204 ip address.
In the Microsoft Windows Network, my test XP machine only sees my school network. It wouldn't let me see the 2003 server. Grr...
I went to the library and got onto a 205 ip computer, and it saw both our school server and the 2003 server. I tried to connect it to the 2003 server and got this error:
quote: The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.contoso.com
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
contoso.com com
I went back to my office and ran ipconfig /registerdns on my test XP machine with the 204 ip address...and then it could connect!!! But now it can't see my school network---I want it to because our school also has a 2000 library server and another 2003 server for special ed. I need the computers to be able to see all networks.
Questions: Do I need to run "ipconfig /registerdns" on all computers to get them to connect to my server? How can I get my DNS on my 2003 server to recognize the other networks? DNS kinda confuses me.
Also, any forum suggestions? I know computer issues are not really part of books, food, film, and culture.
