Does anyone know what this name is short for? There's an ad on the sides of buses here in Chicago for DJs named Opie and Anthony. And there was Opie who was played by Ron Howard.

Is it just the initials O.P.? Or is there an actual name that has the nickname Opie?

My best friends dog was named Opie. But it was intentionally short for Opium. He was living in Hong Kong at the time, the site of The Opium Wars.

Isn't there a Hebrew name "Ophnie?" Thats a possibility.

I thought 'opie' was some sort of derogitory slang for white people, or country people, or something? I'm probably wrong.

Star Lisa--O. P. == Optimus Prime

The North Pennine Ancestors site, about which I know nothing, offers this with regard to Opie as a surname:
quote:
OPIE. This appears to be a Cornish name. The family owned barton (?) of the manor of Lancarffe or Lancoff, held of the honor of Bodmin, or of S. Petrock, in the 15thC.

I think he's thinking of Chofni. It's usually transliterated as Hophni.

The Ron Howard character's "real" name was Opie; it wasn't a nickname.
The radio guy calls himself Opie because of a supposed resemblance to Howard.

I like the initial idea. O and P are his initials, but since he doesn't like, or can't say his full name, the initials became what he was called.

OP--Oligarch of Pansfanistan. Russian gangster/ruler/crooked business man who has enough money that he can hide from Putin by being a 1950's tv Character.

OP--Octavius Plutarch, last in line for inheriting the title Emporer of Rome. If it comes out the assasins will show up.

OP--Optimus Prime was disguised as a little red-headed kid in North Carolina hills. When he transformed, it was, like, gross.

OP--Oswald Purvis. Would you want to be called Oswald Purvis.

OPP--Mid-90's rap song. ("Who's down with OPP? That's you and me!") Drop the last P because, hey this is the 50s and North Carolina, and they don't PP in either place.
