So, who here has listened to this suite by Gustav Holst? What are your favorite planets? [Smile]

1. Saturn (you can hear the midlife crisis)
2. Neptune
3. Venus
4. Uranus
5. Mercury
6. Jupiter
7. Mars (suffers from overuse)

I like Jupiter, actually. Though Mars is still very cool. We marched a Holst show in college, actually.

We played a band arrangement of Jupiter once. It was a blast.

There's a reason why Mars is overused, and it's not because it sucks.

I forgot Jupiter! (edit)

No, Mars isn't overused because it sucks, it sucks because it's overused. It's a great piece. Everyone from John Williams to Hans Zimmer have taken from it. I'd just like the rest of the planets performed more often, because IMO they are just as good as Mars in their own way.

I'm glad no one's mentioned Pluto, since that chunk of rock no longer deserves a song in a suite of songs about planets.

BWAHAHAHAHA!

John Williams took more from Holst than just bits of Mars. Go grab the Star Wars soundtrack for Eps 4-6 and compare to pretty much any of the Planets.

Jupiter was fun, we played it in band. I also think I liked Uranus and Mercury, but I haven't listened to them in a long time.

We played it too, Porter, back in band I mean. Actually, it was my first orchestra experience. Until I played that, I'd always been in wind/percussion band only. Back in my junior high, there was band and there was orchestra, but for some reason the two weren't mingled except for a few specific things.

-------

I was always a fan of Jupiter...but I can honestly say I love `em all. They're all in my shuffle mix, with none rated higher or lower than the rest.

Actually, Rakeesh, this was an arrangement of Jupiter for brass, woodwind, and percussion.

In fact, my favorite band pieces, like Pictures at an Exibition, were adapted orchestral pieces.

Pluto IS my favorite PLANET. Partly because it was discovered by a Kansan, Clyde Tombaugh.

I'm also quite fond of Neptune, for some odd reason.

The very weird thing is that I was thinking about this topic, the Holst planets, today. I even recommended one of my friends to go listen to them.

Pluto is my favorite DWARF planet [Wink] . As for the suite, I like Mars the most, and not because it sucks.

I love all the planets. And I love Gustav Holst. I love the classical symphony version and I love Tomita's planets, too.

I love them all. Although I do agree with Earendil18 that Mars suffers from over use as well as an abundance of poor imitations to which I myself and guilty and for that I'm sorry. [Smile]

Celaeno, where did you go to school? Who did you study timps with?

I don't play professionally, and I'm not a music major. The closest I get is my university gives me a (very small) quarterly scholarship to play in its tiny symphony orchestra.

I'm from Hawaii. I started percussion at Punahou School, and I learned timpani from Ira Wong and Donna Oyama. I studied with Jim Kassis here in California for a couple of quarters, but it didn't work out. Now I play for recreation.

I'm hoping that after I graduate I can play in the pit for some productions. I'd even do it for free. I just can't imagine not playing anymore.

I like the Jupiter band arrangments because they already have a lot of brass instrumentation! [Wink] It's crazy fun with those really fast intro parts!

Zimmer's "Gladiator" etc, use Mars a lot too.
