I have a stapler which I have not used for a couple of months because it was out of staples. I knew I had staples somewhere, but I couldn't find them. So I've been making do with paper clips, or borrowing a stapler when I needed it.
This morning I was cleaning up my office, and I found the staple box underneath a bunch of file folders. Hooray!! So naturally, I went looking for the stapler and couldn't find it.
A while later found that. Hooray! Now to put the staples in it. Where did I put that box of staples? How far away could I have gone with that box of staples? Returned to cleaning other things, and eventually found the staples sitting on a shelf above my computer. Was able to reunite the box of staples with the newly relocated stapler, and as I opened it up, I discovered . . .
It already had staples in it.
Hello???? I cannot imagine what I've been thinking all this time. Except that I suspect I have another stapler around here, and that's the one that's stapleless. This one is small and beige, and I think the other is big and black. So I'm pretty sure I'll find that around here once I shovel out the pile of papers on my desk.
Yep, sure does sound like ADD, eh? I did try Ritalin once upon a time. It was a love/hate relationship (wheee!), but ultimately I felt I was abusing a drug. However, I've had great success with modifying my diet (mainly eliminating sugars and refined foods and eating 3 squares w/ protein per day). I've been totally off the wagon on that plan for some time, though. But this is the year--I am filled with optimism--I'm gonna get control of my life!
(oh, and I work at home in case you wonder why I didn't just stop by the office supply closet)

Yesterday someone close to me (but who shall remain nameless) put a metal pot of peas in the microwave, with the lid on.
And yesterday I ransacked my office, two other people's offices, a Tim Horton's stand, and the hospital security office looking for a stack of papers I'd somehow misplaced.
At home.
In the kitchen.
Under the cat food.
I think there's something in the air or time of year lately, too.

Uprooted, we should definitely meet at some point. Maybe we could have a Hatrack get-together in which we go to everyone's house and help them clean it.
I do stuff like you described all the time. Ben is also ADD I think. He put my kitten in my Christmas tree the other day...

CT and Olivet, thanks for the stories. As for allowing someone I don't know to clean my house -- oh, the horror!!! ;-) It was a major concession on my part when my dad died and I allowed one of the women from church, bless her kind heart, to come do some vacuuming and dusting to help get ready for out of town guests! (I did not allow her to see the rooms where I'd shoveled all the clutter.)
Olivia, I'd love to meet -- maybe we could arrange a lunch or something in a month or so? (my life's a little chaotic till then!) FYI, my name's Kristina and you can reach me through my profile!

And I once lost a spatula in less than ten seconds. One moment, it was in my hand. The next? Gone. We (nathan and I) spent a long while looking for it and eventually found it wrapped in a kitchen towel on the couch. o_O

I lose my reading glasses all the time. I've "lost" my glasses when a pair was on my head and another pair was tucked in my shirt. No one need know how long and hard I searched for the wee thingies.

I'm guessing, but probably less than five minutes.Edited to add: Ten at the outside. I nearly panicked one day when I looked up from something and couldn't see my baby in his bouncy seat. Completely forgetting that he was asleep on my shoulder and I had been carrying him for over an hour. O_O

I've done the cell phone while talking on it, looked for something while it was in my hand, failed to join two things together when needed (like the stapler), lost my glasses while wearing them, and lost something that was already in the right place... haven't placed a kitty in a tree yet though. But since I've recently acquired access to some *very adorable* kittens, I'm sure I'll be doing that at some point next Christmas. Thank goodness that I'm not alone.
Sidenote: Olivet, is your real name Olivia? I've always had nicknames I didn't like very much and I'm still trying to find one I do like. (Olive, Liv, Livvy, or just plain 'O'.)

Yes, my name is Olivia. Much of my family calls me "Libby" because the lady I was named after was also called by that name, even though it is supposed to be short for Elizabeth.
Most of my Hatrack buddies (especially the Wenches ) call me "Liv" or "Livvy/Livvie" Most people in RL call me "Olivia", though my son's teacher nearly always calls me "Lorraine" for some reason. I think one of the other moms who volunteers a lot is named Lorraine, but I don't know if she ever gets called Olivia by mistake.
I sign my emails ~O. I don't know why. Lazy, I guess.

I've also been given the nicknames "Chana" (some guy thought I looked like a Chana) "Oreo" and "Blair" (blame that one on a sitcom). I've always thought it would be fun to just spell it backwards and make people call me Evil O.

That's to all of you for helping me to not feel so alone in my flakiness! I recognized myself in all those posts.
Especially the "where are the car keys?" and cell phone stories. Heh.
Earlier today I was looking for my glasses. I failed to notice that I could actually see while doing so. And no, I don't wear contacts. OK, so that moment didn't last too long.
I think maybe I should stop telling stories on myself now! Except I have evidence that there are those even worse than me--way worse--I lived with one of them. I don't know how that girl got through life; I think she had guardian angels running around protecting her from herself.
Oh mack -- did you ever figure out how the spatula arrived at its destination, wrapped in a towel? (Sometimes I wonder if one of the other personalities takes over for a few minutes every once in a while, forcing me to do bizarre things I can't explain!)

I woke up one morning, put my glasses on, and realized my vision was inexplicably worse wearing my glasses. I took my glasses off and I could see clearly! I was sure I had somehow been miraculously cured of my near-sightedness . . . until I realized I had slept in my contacts.
