Is anyone going to see this? It looks like it'll be disgusting, but I wonder if it'll be one of those movies where you're, as the woman in Clerks II says, "shocked and appalled and---can't look away."

Nope. Haven't seen any of Murphy's fat-suit movies. Or Martin Lawrences', or the one Jack Black did with Gwyneth Paltrow. I avoid movies with the plotline "Here's a ludicrous person, let's make fun of him/her." So I also haven't seen most of Adam Sandler's oevre and only about half of Jim Carrey's (whom I greatly enjoy when he's not playing an idiot).
However, I liked Clerks II. Settings and situations can be disgusting and still be funny to me. But not when the goal is to set up people to be mocked.

I've grown tired of the male-comedian-dressed-as-a-woman bit. It's been done and done and done to death. Not funny anymore. (IMO, of course)

What was the last good movie Edie Murphy did? Apart from voice work, I'm thinking Beverly Hills Cop. He used to be so funny. I wonder why he keeps picking such bad movies?

Really? though I haven't seen it I heard Showgirls was quite good, as was his performance in it.

I agree...unless the comedian happens to be British.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that the movie is actually Dreamgirls that is being refered to. A very different picture than Showgirls.

Guys, take my word for this: Norbit is awful. I had to preview it last night for work. It is unthinkably horrible. One of the very worst films I've ever seen. Wall-to-wall crap.
Steer clear, big tuna.

DreamGirls.
"Showgirls" doesn't have Eddie Murphy in it, and you'll never hear anyone outside of the creative team say it was "quite good".

Shallow Hal was actually surprisingly decent. I got talked into seeing it (one will do funny things when attempting to work out a reconciliation with one's estranged spouse), but I actually enjoyed most of it. Except for the self-help guru whose name I do not speak.

Bowfinger was hilarious. "I want the best damn crew we can afford!" Cut to the desert, herding Mexicans into a van amidst gunfire from border patrols.
