QMx is set to release the definitive set of Serenity blueprints, painstakingly designed to be architecturally accurate by two of the people most involved with the originals: Tim Earls, illustrator for "Firefly" (he devised the drawings that were used to create the CGI version) and set decorator for "Serenity," and Geoff Mandel, graphic designer for "Serenity" who has also created blueprints for other science fiction shows.

The set will consist of 10 18″ x 24″ full-color sheets in a limited-edition run of 750, with an 11th sheet autographed by the artists.

I've seen 'em all, and they are gorgeous. Tons of research went into this, from show and movie bibles to talking to the CGI guys and other creators, to brainstorming them against all the episodes. You'll finally find out where the shower is, what all the doors are, and why the passengers are shoved into the back.

Check here for more info and some pics. They go on sale midnight, Aril 7, for $99 from www.quantummechanix.com.

I can't believe they're only making 750. Sounds like there will be a lot of disappointed Browncoats [Frown]

At $99 apiece, I find it hard to imagine these selling out very quickly. But I don't actually know what I'm talking about. [Smile]

The price won't deter many people. Browncoats are die hard fans. I'm surprised they're only making so few. It's a great idea though. The blueprints look beautiful.

Especially since that's $60 cheaper than the projected price from last year and I heard a lot of talk about people wanting it then, so.

I might be tempted if I was a rabid fan!

And if I didn't actually think that the ship design was ugly.

I tend to think of it like my 14-year-old Toyota Tercel. It's beat up and lived in, but it'll run forever and I love it.

The actual ship was not one of the things I liked about the show; though the interior set design was homely and very complementary. One does learn to love the dining room/mess hall and other rooms after a few episodes.

I'm sure at least a few of the people buying these prints will be 3dsmax/Maya enthusiasts.

Guy named Sean Kennedy has been doing a Lightwave tutorial on making a Firefly. Is that close enough? [Smile]

BlackMarketBeagles.com had 25 sets to preorder, as of 8 pm PST last night. They're gone now...

Very nice model.

I guess we shouldn't underestimate the enthusiasm of a strong 'cult' fan base. (re: the purchased blueprints)

I'd be excited about the idea if they were actual, hand-drawn, *blueprints*, instead of some shiny cad models. Meh.

I think it's been a while since any blueprints were hand drawn, hasn't it? And I suspect these owe more to Photoshop than a CAD program, although I don't know that for sure. In the crew cabin cutaways you can see Kaylee's dress hanging in her room, I don't know of many CAD programs that allow for that...

Um, CAD is used to produce ugly-*** plans/sections/engineer's drawings/perspectives, not presentation grade material like these 'blueprints'. Chris is right; these might have been done completely in Photoshop.

I'm sure that calling them 'blueprints' is just their way of saying 'These posters are very comprehensive!'

If I had the money to blow, I'd love to have these. I'm not a big Firefly person per-se, but I loved the movie.

Well, if I were to make a drawing like that, I would import a cad drawing into photoshop, which is what I meant when I said cad model. But still, semantics. I'm just annoyed at the misuse of "blueprints" [Razz]

No need to apologize, because you are totally right and I just never quite word things accurately. It's fun to know that there's other people who have spent many an hour staring at cad [Smile]

Just to continue mixing my obsessions, I set up a display of the blueprints at Washtown in Second Life:

"Washtown, SL's largest Browncoat haven, is proud to announce an exhibition of QMx's Official Serenity Blueprints, due to go on sale midnight April 7th. The blueprints have been painstakingly designed by "Firefly" illustrator and "Serenity" set decorator Tim Earls and "Serenity" graphic designer Geoff Mandel. 10 sheets of full-color detail that represent months of research using show and movie bibles, original design artwork, the CGI models, and thousands of screenshots.

"The exhibition, which includes a free promo book, is on display from April 1 to the 22nd."

If you've got SL installed, click here to teleport there.

The blueprints are going on sale tonight at 11:59 PM EST at QMx's website. There were two opportunities earlier this week to preorder that sold out pretty quickly, so this should be interesting.

I just posted an interview with Geoffrey Mandel (artist) and Andy Gore (QMx director).
