Huh. I just read a version of this study a couple weeks ago that said the exact opposite. I can't remember where, though.

Without looking at anything, men have been trained over the last 20 years or so NOT to oggle, but that cultural dynamic hasn't really been strongly directed against women.

I also remember seeing a study that said that men were likely to ogle more.

Oh well. Maybe these studies were done at different countries/cultures?

ElJay: Maybe you're thinking of the study where men and women evaluated a pitcher for ability, and men would ogle down, while women remained more focused?

That would seem to address a different realm of ogle-age.

The article I found interesting talked about how women are much more likely to ogle a man that other women are ogling.

But that isn't true for men? Is this behavior a group behavior or one in privacy?

Haven't read that yet, but I ogled two men at Family Values last year.
Actually, I ogled ALL THE MEN. [Evil Laugh]

I think ogling is seen as more harmless in women than in men. Mainly because it's much harder for a woman to rape a man than for a man to rape a woman (not impossible, mind you, I just said harder) so probably most men would not feel quite as freaked out about being ogled. Also, their clothing is often not as conducive to it.

Not that it's right or harmless to ogle ANYONE until they feel uncomfortable. Just that it's SEEN as less harmful, or perceived as less dangerous.

And didn't we have a thread about how male animals are obsessed with *ahem* "the area"? Is that what people are thinking of?

Kqueen, I think that's only true in America, where it seems like men ogle as much, if not more, to cause discomfort than to express any actual physical attraction or appreciation.

Most European girls I know (and even American girls, while in Europe) enjoy (or at least don't mind) being ogled, because it's flattering rather than scary.

"Were you looking at that woman, dear?"

"You want the truth or a lie?"

"Lie."

"Of course not, dear. She's got nothing on you. Why would I look?"

"What's the truth then?"

"Of course I looked. I'm married; I'm not dead."

I don't remember anything after that.

I know lots of guys who enjoy being ogled by women. Guys think, "Oh yeah, take a good look at the merchandise. I'm hot!"

Biologically, in many species the males have distinctive characteristics to attract female attention; the peacock's tail, lion's mane, and elk's antlers can all serve as visual cues of virility and prominence.

Actually I get bored with the way women check me out all the time. It's like I'm a bone and they're a bunch of hungry dogs. I know it sounds appealing but when you look as good as I do it gets old.

I ogle. I confess. My husband does, too, and it doesn't bother me. Perhaps because he tends to ogle women who look like me. He has more of a 'type' than I do, I guess.

We both ogle men and women, and compare giggly notes.

I ogle, but not in a conventional way. Not in the "there's a buff guy in a tight shirt, HOT!" way. I do "eye up" guys who fit a certain type, that is, a physical type that is most attractive to me. And I think "i wonder if he's smart/reads" as a secondary thought to the initial attraction. Most of the time it's in a circumstance where I won't end up talking to the guy, i.e. when I'm at work and there's hundreds of guests passing by me in a given day. Plus, most young, attractive men at Disney World, predictably but unfortunately, are married or visiting with their girlfriends. [Smile] I look at the face, and wonder whether it's a "kind" face. Thousands of thoughts follow in rapid succession, but i ogle in a very purposeful way [Smile]

Everyone ogles, I think. Except blind people, and they probably ear-ogle. I love to watch people, kind of in a similar way to Leonide. It's not just about looks, it's about "look."

Edit: refers to Chris' post

We do that, too!

Me: Wow. Real or store bought?

Him: Store bought. Should have spent some of that money above the neck.

Me: Didn't notice.

When I'm sitting at a train station waiting, I often play the instant rating game for about 5 minutes, where I look at people coming past and number them from 1-10. It feels kinda objecti-fying but it does pass the time.

Yeah, I wind up doing that more than I know I should, if the woman's wearing tight pants. It always seems to me that it must feel so free and unencumbered to have female rather than male anatomy down there. What a flimsy rationalization ...

I think there was something on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" regarding a study that suggested men and women ogle similarly, but it's more obvious with men, because women's peripheral vision is stronger.

"...and women focused longer on photographs of men performing sexual acts with women than did the males."

"Viewing porn" is now considered "ogling"?? Since when? [Confused]

I was vaguely considering a "Women Boggle More" dobie, but I think I'm too lazy/exhausted to track down a link for it.
