Has anyone seen this film? I just had a chance to see it and it was, in a word, amazing. I can't place it in a niche--it's part period piece, part fable, part slasher. It's morbidly fascinating and involving.

It's based on a fairly popular German novel (which, according to Roger Ebert, is stunning as an audio book) that various famous directors have declared unfilmable. I wouldn't know about whether or not that charge is true but the film expertly relates it's subject matter: scent.

This is probably one of those films where it helps not know what to expect, so I'm not going summarize the plot. Just keep the title in mind whenever it comes on dvd!

Notable cast members include Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman, plus that little girl from that recent Peter Pan movie.

I saw it a while ago and am eagerly waiting for its DVD release...which still has no date in sight...

I thought the movie was fantastic, although apparently the only other guy in the theater with me didn't and walked out 20 minutes into the film.

I tried to read the book, but it seemed to be exactly the same as the movie.

And that stocking stuffer is creepy.

I have yet to read the book. However, I have been wanting to, but I don't feel financially stable enough to pay 15 bucks for a trade paperback.

I haven't actually seen it, but my dad owns it, and adores it completely. I'm still waiting to see it, I just haven't gotten a chance yet. [Smile]

I had no idea it was already out on DVD. It was in the theater for such a short amount of time. (I actually started a thread when I saw the trailer on Apple.com). The book is one of my favorites. I think I'll go the DVD tomorrow if I can find the time.

This is one of my top-10 all time favorite books. Great novel. The movie was good, but a little too long and didn't do the book justice. the movie had its moments though.
