Today marks our fourth anniversary. Imagine, four years ago today, I met my husband in person for the first time, and less than eight hours later, was married. Whirlwind romance... Moving halfway around the world...
And yet, we still have bliss. Happiness reigns.
Sadly, we're not doing anything - we're both still sick. A week and a half ago, we were in a trishaw and got severely splashed with monsoon puddles, some of it going in Fahim's mouth. Yuck! He got sick a day later, me after that (cold, tonsillitis, and stomach flu - yay!) Anyway, still recovering. Instead, we've got rainchecks on that... Yeah, reality, eh? Let's put it this way: I don't rule anything out of my life, especially where world travel is concerned! But no, no actual plans to be anywhere that there are trishaws and monsoons anytime soon. Although you'd better believe that if Southeast Asia ever shows up on my itinerary, I'd find a way to make it to Sri Lanka to meet you!

Congratulations. Sixty two years ago my Mom and Dad were married, eight hours after they first met in person. No problems yet. I hope the same for you two.

Mom wrote an article for a magazine called The Liohona. Its circulation was mostly Mormon missionaries. Dad, who was a Navy Medic attached to the Marines and on his way to the South Pacific, saw the article and wrote the author. Her version was that he wrote to take issue with the article. His version was that he wrote in respose to the author's thumbnail photo attached to the piece. They corresponded for three years while he was overseas. When he returned, he bought a bus ticket from San Franscisco to Logan UT. He walked to her fathers house from the bus to meet her. Later that day they were married in the Logan LDS Temple. They left the next day on the bus to return to the Bay area. where they started their life together living in a chicken coop in Hayward CA. Dad finished his service obligation at the Navel hospital at what is now Camp Parks. I missed being a Calfornian by only months!

I knew within 8 hours I was going to marry my wife, but we took 9 months to actually do it. That is an interesting story. I'm glad it is working out for you.

Omega, yep. But then, in North America, people can get sick from their tap water, only there, it's a scandal. Our tap water isn't safe from the tap for drinking - it has to be boiled first.
Keep in mind that people bathe and crap in streams, springs, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. And there are a lot of people who don't have water to their house/hut and wash at a community water pipe. Houses tend to have septic tanks, but grey water is taken away from the house through open water troughs at the side of the road. With flooding...

quid, I love the story of you two being married. Perhaps you've already linked it and I missed it, but didn't you have a blog about your move and marriage and adjustment? I seem to remember reading it...I liked it a lot; it was really interesting.
Abhi and I are finally having our Hindu wedding ceremony in India this winter. If you feel like making a little trip to Calcutta in December, between the two of us we could make you Real. (Sadly, we have absolutely no time in our itinerary to get to Sri Lanka this trip.)
Really do consider it, if you're interested in traveling there. You know how these things are in South Asia - more the merrier!

Sterling, I don't know. What's the "smug married people stage"? I suspect I haven't. I'm too grateful for Fahim to take him for granted, and had entirely given up on relationships when it happened, so it was rather surprising, and I'm too cognizant of the incredibly huge miracle it was, if that makes sense. I'm not sure smugness happens in the same neighborhood with sheer overwhelming gratitude that I actually managed to find someone who not only loves me as much as I love him, but is also completely compatible. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong.

And Jhai, small, medium, or large wedding? When Fahim's brother got married, it was a small wedding with only 400 or so guests. He's had a few cousins get married since then, and the guest list has been in the 1500+ range. Boggles my mind, let me tell ya. Plus, just a wedding, or days of events before and after as well?
But of course I'm interested. We may not have the fundage then, but we have talked about visiting India since I haven't been there yet. Tell me more?
And with a wedding, of course I understand the bit about no time for detours. You'll have pretty much every minute of every day already accounted for by his parents already... I don't remember - are his parents in India?

The wedding will be two days - Decemeber 24th & 25th, I believe (Abhi's parents, who are indeed in India, are planning everything). It'll be taking place in Calcutta proper, and will probably have roughly 400 people there? I'll have to ask Abhi for a better number - pretty much everyone there will be from his family's side only, which keeps the numbers down a bit. He's Bengali (as you might have guessed from the Calcutta address) so it'll be a typical Bengali wedding. Except that Abhi has refused to wear the hat. And, yeah, all of our days are completely accounted for, between visiting his old friends, seeing family, and taking in the different sights. If you did plan on making the trip we could make suggestions as to other things to see in Calcutta and other parts of India, as we're doing for the few members of my family who can afford the flight over.

400 isn't bad for one side of the family. Okay, I'm laughing a bit, just so you know. Do his parents/relatives speak English or will they be speaking Bengali with Abhi translating for you? Oh, the fun! Will you be eating with your hands? Have you been practicing?
Have you been to India before? I don't remember. Maybe you're an old hand already...
Do you know what happens on each of the two days?
And we'll have to see. I'd love to come, but Fahim hasn't been properly employed for, um, a while. We've been freelancing, but without a steady stream of income, it can sometimes be difficult to gauge these things. I'll let you know. It all sounds exciting and interesting. No idea. Near as I can tell, there are no airlines that travel between the two airports, so it looks like we'd have to fly to, say, Madras, on one airline and transfer to another for the second leg. To find prices, looks like I'd have to ask a travel agent. Online airline thingies don't work for this part of the world.
Colombo to Singapore is around $400, so I could guess $100-200, per person return.

I finally found one site that had prices. $1000+ per person return. For a flight that's 3/4 the distance of the Colombo-Singapore flight. Yeah, that's not happening.
