Since the main film itself has been confirmed as a "re-imagined prequel" of sorts to TOS era Star Trek, there are several ways "Old Spock" could turn up.
Farmgirl: Yeah, was it just me, or wasn't Kirk killed off more than a decade ago?

In the Star Trek: The Next Generation film Generations, Kirk was lost (and presumed dead) when the newest USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) was damaged by the Nexus, which he entered. In this alternate existence, he was persuaded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard from the year 2371 to return to planet Veridian III and stop Tolian Soran from sacrificing 230 million lives in order for him to reenter the Nexus. During the climax, Kirk was able to retrieve and activate a cloaking control device from a damaged construction span, enabling Picard to sabotage Soran's plans. However, the span collapsed, causing Kirk to fall. Picard manages to get to Kirk as he lay dying underneath the wreckage, and subsequently buried his predecessor on the plateau.
In the original script of Star Trek: Generations, Soran killed Kirk by shooting him in the back. This filmed ending was changed after negative reactions from test audiences. The revised death in the film was still not well received by many fans.
In books written by William Shatner, beginning with Star Trek: The Return, Captain Kirk is brought back to life from alien technology.

Yeah - alien technology. I love it that alien technology always saves the day...
(of course, I thought bringing Spock back to life via the Genesis project was pretty cool too)

Hmmm. I think the official line at Paramount about the events that happen in the novels is that (unless otherwise stated) they take place in the various alternate ST universes. You know, like the Mirror Universe, or the one where Worf and Troi are married.

And that goes DOUBLE for any books written by Shatner. (Except the ones ghost-written by the Reeves-Stevenses. Those aren't too horrible.)

The ones ghost-written by Ron Goulart (the Tek series) weren't all bad.

I've managed to block all memory of the Tek books (and I managed to get through 3 or 4 of the things).

No one falls like Gaston, goes "Kaplop!" like Gaston, No one's quite as incredibly dead as Gaston.
