Hi there everybody. Haven't been around in (what feels like) a long time. :-). I'm working on a landmark just because there have been quite a few in my life that are worth mentioning. But that's not the purpose of this thread.
A few weeks ago I went to Mexico. While I was there one of the people I was with heard I enjoyed doing some video editing. So she let me use her camera, which is a new-fangled one that records right to DVD's. Now, she sent me the DVD's it recorded to, as well as what appears to be some normal DVD which she put it on to. And I need to get it on my computer. Does anyone have any idea how I do that? I thought I did, but I've been baffled so far. My next course of action is to buy DVD ripping software.
So, firstly, any ideas as to how to get these on to my computer sans DVD ripping software? Secondly, any suggestions for some good, relatively cheap DVD ripping software?
Any help would be appreciate. I've missed you guys.

If the dvd plays in a set top player, the video is encoded as MPEG2 "vob" files. There are a couple of ways to edit your video from these files.
For example: Copy the vob files from the video_ts folder onto your hard drive, then rename the files from the .vob extension to .mpg. Some (not all) editing software will now recognize the files as MPEG2 encoded video and let you import the clips with no problem.
If this doesn't work, download a copy of the open source tool "VirtualDub MPEG", use it to open the VOB files, and save from there as AVI's. (There's lots of VirtualDub tutorials and documentation on the web.)

You don't actually need DVD Decrypter unless the DVD has been encrypted to disallow copying. Usually only commercial DVD's are encrypted.

Except that it also changes the format while it is doing that, sometimes.
I use DVDShrink , it's free and it works great. I have no idea if it would work for you in this case though.
