Yeah, that's right. It's happened here with a girl on a WoW binge, didn't it? I remember seeing pictures of the huge in-game funeral her friends and guild held for her - which is very sweet but very creepy at the same time.
It can really become a destructive addiction. I'm a past obsessive myself, so I always used to think, in defense of it as a lifestyle, that criticism against intense online gaming was ignorant and that socializing is socializing. I see stories like this and then it isn't that simple. It's incredibly scary to think about how easily people can let themselves become too involved, because it's a very comfortable process.

I don't know why this is so news worthy. Seems to me far more people die of alcohol poisoning and you don't see that in the news that often. This is the third incident of death directly involving excessive video game playing that I have ever heard of.
Though video game addiction is CERTAINLY a big problem nowadays, I and family members of mine have suffered as a result of it, mentioning that some guy in Guang Zhou died from exhaustion at an internet cafe seems as important as reporting a man was chopping down a tree when the axe head swung free and killed his coworker.

Well, it's newsworthy because, unlike both of your examples, video games aren't supposed to carry any significant risk of death.
If you drink, especially to excess, you know that you're risking alcohol poisoning. If you swing an axe you know there's a chance you might lose control of it and hurt someone.

Yeah, videogames are supposed to just make you unfit and possibly decrease your age of "natural cause" death, like twinkies.

As obvious as it is to me why something like this is newsworthy every time it happens, now El JT's got be worried about something else. Isn't it more alarming that thousands of people who DO know the risk of something like alcohol poisoning, can't refrain from continuing anyway?

How is this even possible? The cybercafes I've been to aren't open 24/7, and even if they are, shouldn't there be some sort of time limit?! It's not like cybercafes are automated.

I motion for a ban on the scientific knowledge of the existence of alcohol.
Now of course I'm joking, I understand that you're saying that the alcohol beverage manufacturers could hold some fault (as long as they make it people will buy it). But I think that the demand is more of the problem, as we can see with the prohibition.
