Just saw this on his blog. Very sad news, I really thought he'd make it. Feels cheap to think about the last book, but I guess it's on everyone's mind. I rather think Harriet will finish it, though I can't imagine how difficult that would be for her.

It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain. In the years he had fought this, he taught me much about living and about facing death. He never waivered in his faith, nor questioned our God’s timing. I could not possibly be more proud of anyone. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with him on this earth and look forward to our reunion, though as I told him this afternoon, not yet. Our beloved Harriet was at his side through the entire fight and to the end. The last words from his mouth were to tell her that he loved her.
Thank each and everyone of you for your prayers and support through this ordeal. He knew you were there. Harriet reminded him today that she was very proud of the many lives he had touched through his work. We’ve all felt the love that you’ve been sending my brother/cousin. Please keep it coming as our Harriet could use the support.
Jason will be posting funeral arrangements.

To Catalyst: Never, never loose faith. RJ did not. Harriet hasn’t. I haven’t. Going through what we have, our faith is only strengthened. Besides, if God didn’t exist, we would have never had Jim. We did. God does. Remember my Brother/Cousin, my friend, think of him fondly and glorify God’s name.

Can someone explain the references in the letter to me - e.g. references to the Dragon, the Brother/Cousin bit, 4th of 3, etc.?

I always refused to tackle the WOT books until I was certain they were all finished. I'm sad that it appears I may never undertake the challenge.

I missed this thread at first and started my own (now deleted). I guess I'm just not ready for speculation about what would have happened in the last book. Right now, this is just so sad. Jordan wasn't even that old and well, more than the age -- he didn't finish this work of a lifetime. This is a dark day.

Yeah, BlackBlade, I was going to do the same thing. I stopped halfway through The Eye of the World because I figured I'd need to start from the beginning to refresh my memory whenever a new novel came out. I didn't think the part I'd read to be as awe-inspiring as the blurbs said the series was, but I was impressed by the its sheer size. I feel bad it will never be finished.

They are personal life references, not book references. Wilson is biologically Robert Jordon's cousin, but they are very close...so they call each other brother/cousin. I believe the 4th of 3 refers to the same thing, Wilson refers to himself as the 4th of 3 children in the family.

Thanks - in combination with the religious language, they sounded like some really bizarre cult references.

Dang…. That stinks…. It seems so cold to worry about his last book in a time like this. But his WOT was the only thing I knew him through. It’ll have to be hard for his wife to finish it. But wow, what a legacy he’s leaving behind. Her and the family will need lots of prayers.

I thought he was very good to his fans by making sure several people knew how WOT ends, so eventually we will all know if Rand saves the world. I thought it was sad that he wasn't able to finish his life's work though.

A guy at work just handed me Eye of the World the other day. I haven't read a word of it yet, but I remember trying to tackle it a few years ago when my brother bought me the first three books for my birthday.
But from the sound of it, he'll be greatly missed in the literary community.

Gosh, this is a bad time for fantasy/sci-fi novelists.
I never read any of Mr. Jordan's books, but that doesn't matter. Obviously his work touched a lot of people - and that is something to be very proud of.

I really loved the first three Wheel of Time books. I couldn't get into any of the ones after that, though.
This is sad. I'll miss him.
I just got finished reading through a lot of the posts on his blog. Sounds like he was a real optimist, a fighter -- his family was there with him to the end, which touched me.
In other words, he was a good person that the world will miss.
Rest in peace Jim Rigney.
