In the Dallas Arboretum, there is a pumpkin patch. Halloween night, I will be there, carrying a flashlight, pumpkin cookies, a copy of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a blanket, and a pair of binoculars. I've convinced one person (Coccinnelle) to come with me and almost convinced another, if I can appeal to his sense of adventure. I haven't talked to anyone else yet, so I don't know how many there are going to be. We'll read the short story to each other, and then tell ghost stories.
I've never done this before, and I will watch It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on Saturday as research. Does anyone know any spooky songs (I have a harmonica)? Also, if we see the Great Pumpkin, do you have any requests?

The Arboretum isn't open at that time, and I don't think there are any guards. I know where there is a hole in the fence. I wish you could come - this is going to be great.
There ARE a dozen giant-sized bug statues scattered around the gardens, though, and they look disturbingly lifelike...

He's gonna find out From folks that he meets Who deserves tricks And who deserves treats. Great Pumpkin is coming to town!
He'll search in every pumpkin patch, Haunted houses far and near To see if you've been spreading gloom, Or bringing lots of cheer.

I just want to know what you're planning on doing if the Spooky Jack-O-Lantern Man shows up instead of the Great Pumpkin?
"Once a little pumpkin Shook his little head. "Now," said he, "I'm going to scare Some children in their beds! Watch me put some scary teeth In my pumpkin head! Watch the children with a scream Jump out of their beds!"
So the little pumpkin Cut some scary teeth! To the window then he crept, And crouched down underneath. How his eyes were glowing bright, With an eerie flame! 'Spooky Jack-o'Lantern Man,' Then became his name.
As those children dreamed of Tricks and treats in store, Spooky Jack-o'Lantern Man Came knocking at their door! Out of bed the children jumped, Screaming as they ran, "Spooky Jack-o'Lantern Man, Catch us if you can!"

I'm not sure. It's kind of a manufactured pumpkin patch. I know of another pumpkin patch, but there are ants in it, and I think it's going to be patrolled on Halloween night.
Do you think that will affect my chances of seeing the Great Pumpkin? We will be the sincerest pumpkin patch denizens in the land...

That's right - you're in Dallas! Have you been to the Aroboretum this fall? The bug statues are really beautiful, and there are bug stations all over with the living versions. Do you have any kids older than a baby? They would love it - there were four year olds babbling out the scientific names of things.

Nope, this is our first, and we don't go to the Arboretum very often-- it's kind of a big deal to go out with the baby. That sounds really cool, though, maybe we'll go today or next week.

There has been a distinct lack of enthusiasm from the BPs here for the Great Pumpkin, although Taalcon did generously remind me that in the movie everyone ended up hating Linus for dragging them out there, so maybe that's appropriate.

I am becoming more and more like Linus. My Adventure Guy Friend bailed because he has a huge project for school coming up and he decided to be a grownup. Coccinelle teaches high school in Dallas and therefore has issues with possible consequences for sneaking into the arboretum.
I have a feeling that when the Great Pumpkin comes, I will be the only one to see him. I'm still taking requests, although, for your sake Noemon and Bobble, I'm not mentioning the pumpkin pie comment.

"I would go, but I have to make a model of teeth for dental school." "I would go, but if I get caught I could lose my job and/or career." "I would go, but I live in Utah/Wisconsin/Massachuesetts/Kansas." "I would go, but I'm an accountant."
*pout* Everyone has a reason. I don't actually want to be Linus - waiting around by yourself for a big pumpkin sounds slightly sociopathic. With friends = fun. By yourself = weird. Turns out I'm a social believer, a cultural pumpkinist, a Jack... *grin*

Plant your own. That way you can tend it all year, and know its sincerity. And it will be legal, so that'll knock out some of the excuses.

Oh, Katharina, if I were there, I would go out into the arboretum with you. I've been out in the rain all day and it hasn't bugged me a bit. Happy Samhain!
