I'm getting Rich Dad seminar in Baltimore. That's kind of creeping me out, if it knows I'm in Baltimore.

{P.S. I originally got it looking at the "who does this actor look like?" thread.

I suppose it might be going by IP addresses, but does that seem creepy to you? I don't like it.

Ditto. It's probably going by IP addresses. Then again, Google knows exactly who I am -- I am logged into gmail and Google Calendar in other tabs. *shrug*

Oh. That could be. Though I don't have a tab open, but I'm pretty sure if I went to gmail right now I wouldn't have to log in.

I think hotmail still thinks I live in Utah. And I registered for gmail in Utah and don't remember changing that.

It's funny because I used to get monster searchs for Utah all the time, but I registered for Monster in MD. I think sometimes this internet thing is not as smart as it thinks it is.

Then there's the Google search bar & pop-up blocker I've tied into my browser.
Plus I always start a browsing session by opening two windows, then select Google as my homepages on both.
(Other sites are too ugly and too often slow-loading)

Yeah, I'm getting CliffsNotes are free. (Which is weird, cause don't you usually have to pay for CliffsNotes? When did they become free, and why advertise them then?)

It can probably easily figure out where you're from using your IP. Not that big a deal really.

VietnamCupid.com

Usually I get similar ones - the most common is gay-parship.co.uk. Could it be someone else in the network that's, ah, giving google the idea? Because that's a really baffling ad to be apparently targeted at me.

I think it works out where you are from your IP address.
But I don't know why it thinks I personally would want a Vietnamese wife.

I'm getting Custom-made Kanji names and phrases. Apparently marketed at people looking to get tattoos, so I don't know why it would show that ad to me.

Not to brag, but it says "Advertisement" and there's nothing there. ABP FTW.

It's blank. Just a blue "Ads by Google" bar, with a white rectangle beneath it that I can only see by selecting it.

Sort of like the invisible rectangle under the logo on every Hatrack page.

Advertisers who are buying ad space through Google will typically pay for certain keywords, and if those keywords show up on the page, Google will show their ad.

So when people start taking note of what the ads are about and posting information about them, that can actually change they types of ads Google sends.

For example, if the VietnamCupid people paid for keywords relating to the orient (which might include words like chinese, japanese, etc), having people point out the "learn Chinese" ad could trigger a change in ads.

And now that I've started talking about keywords, it wouldn't be TOO surprising if eventually people start seeing SEO/website promotion ads on this page. [Smile]

I'm going to try to hijack the ads on this thread.

You know what's really cool? Sprinklers! I want to buy a sprinkler for my yard. Or maybe I want to install a sprinkler system to protect my home or business from fire. Either for watering plants (giving them water) or for watering my living room in case of a fire, a sprinkler system is what I need. Free installation? What about parts or service? I would buy sprinkler from China or from made in the USA. I need irrigation all the time. Irrigate this. Permanent or temporary lawn sprinkler systems preferred!

Probably with that nice-looking Chinese person wearing the phone headset. Looks like she works in the Imperial Palace Call Center, right next to the Great Wall.

What if we could push the internet into an infinite regress of advertisement = interest.

For instance, by mentioning google ads enough to get google ads to post an ad about google ads, and then google ads will slowly drift up to the top of the google search terms lists and soon the google ads page will be ad supported to include google ads about google ads.

I think that happened with Paris Hilton a few years ago.

Fish and sprinklers not withstanding, I'm getting an ad for Rich Dad in Salt Lake. Which is not where I live, but it is where I am right now, so I guess that lends support to the IP theory.
