A thought struck me today, about role models.

When it comes down to it, we all see people around us, people in fiction, people in history, and gain inspiration from them, right? Who are your role models, the people that make you say "I want to be like them!"

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Good question. I don't think I really do have people who I consider role models. I'm just impressed upon generally by everyone I know, and as far as I know I'm just modeling myself on the things I think are positive in society. I can't point to a single individual and think that I want to be like them. I'm .. just too busy being me, I guess?

That's more or less how I feel. There's no one that I really want to [i]be[/]. But there are a number of people I see doing the right thing that I take cues from.

I see and admire qualities of various people without having one who I specifically want to emulate in most respects. But we're talking about role models, not identity models. Right?

I used to know a lot of good religious men but I've come to the conclusion that they're wrong about some pretty significant things. Admirable in many ways, but I don't want to be a good religious man, so they model the role of community service and contemplation about what is good.

People at work usually hit about 2/3 of the right qualities. Somebody will be a hard worker and smart but insufferably egotistical, or will be friendly and humble but have poor judgment, etc.

Online (like here, similar sites) there are tons of people I admire. (You know who you are. Yes, you. I'm talking to YOU.)

Right, scifi. Role models, not identity models. Perhaps my last quote bit was a little offputting in that regard. [Big Grin]

A good example for me, at least, would be Atticus Finch, from To Kill A Mockingbird. Not that I do a good job or anything, but he's still, in some primitive place in my psyche, an incredibly strong impression.

Does the little voice in your head start sentences with "Now, Scout..."? [Big Grin]

I greatly admire the geeky gregariousness of Larry Niven.

In fiction, Atticus Finch is definitely one of my role models. (Though I haven't had internal lectures start with "Now, Scout..." Now I feel like I've been missing out. [Smile] ) In the real world,I look up to Roméo Dallaire, my father in many ways, and my grandfather.
