Tova said she wanted to read a book called The Beast Behind the Door. Or something like that. She said it's the Beast behind something. It's brown with a door and has yellow light around the door. Does this ring any bells with anyone? She's pretty sure about the "Beast" part, and she thinks it's not The Star Beast.

I can't recall Tova's age, so even this as a suggestion may be so simplistic as to be offensive, but ... you're pretty sure it's "beast" and not "monster," as in The Monster at the End of This Book (Sesame Street)?

Tova is going to be 10 next month. And we have The Monster at the End of the Book. But that wasn't offensive at all; just... not it.

She says she saw it when Havah had it, but Havah doesn't recognize the title or description at all. I'm wondering whether she might have dreamt it.

Here's the picture, it's written by a Rabbi, but it seems a little high-falutin' for a 10 year old.

Thanks, Jonny. That's the one. And yes, we do have it. It just never occurred to us in a billion years that it could be what she was talking about. She's just full of surprises.

The only thing else that comes to mind (and I'm pretty sure this isn't it) would be The Mural Master by Adrienne Jones (1974 publication). I seem to recall beams of light coming out from a door he was painting in the cover art.

Great book, though. Initially rather dark, IIRC.

That book is absolutely phenomenal. And there's another book along similar lines called Between the Lines of the Bible, by Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom. Both of them are part of a school of biblical scholarship that aims to understand potential confusing passages by means of including them in the wider context of the rest of the Bible.

In this particular case (The Beast that Crouches at the Door), it takes off from the fact that the wording in Genesis 3:16 and Genesis 4:7 are so similar.

Your desire will be unto your husband, and he will master you.

Unto you is its [sin's] desire, and you will master it.

You don't see it as much in English translation, but in Hebrew, it stands out. And yet I'd never seen a commentary really deal with what was clearly a shout out: "Explain me!"

The Etshalom book deals with several subjects, rather than just one. The two accounts of creation in Genesis 1 and 2. The slaughter of the town of Shechem by Jacob's sons. A bunch of other striking topics.

Yup. I took a class with him for several years, his wife was my son's preschool teacher, and he taught a class for us a few semesters back.
