I'ld say HL2, Portal, I think Reccetear is cute, Magicka is hilariously fun. I like Mass Effect, I like Neverwinter Nights 2, I like Civ4, Men of War is a nice compromise between Close COmbats realism and Company of Heroe's arcade feel.
Oh and Hoi2, EU3, Victoria 2 etc.
Supreme Commander is nice though kinda flawed in its implementation, SupCom2 was fine on its own merits but as a total annilihiation sequel it sucked.
Dwarf Fortress, Starcraft and EVE Online should go without saying.
Right now I'm exploring Visual Novels, yes including eroges.

Final Fantasys 4 and 6, but especially 6. Chrono Trigger. Those RPGs hit the sweet spot of not only being really awesome, but also coming out during the time of my youth when I was most into video games.
I spent thousands of hours playing the original Mario Kart, and then Mario Kart 64 after that. Those were great games to play against your friends.
Loved all the NES and SNES side-scrolling Metroidvania action games and shooters. Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Metroid, and Castlevania all had fantastic games in their franchises. The Zelda games of course, especially Link to the Past for SNES. Really there are just way too many games I loved from that generation to name them all.
From this gen: Bioshock, Mass Effect (love that soundtrack), Street Fighter 4, Assassin's Creed 2, various downloadable games, and so on and etc.

1. An amazing game. Easily the best written CRPG I've ever had the pleasure of playing. 2. You always liked Grim Fandango more than I did. I found the controls on it pretty frustrating, and I'm only somewhat fond of the genre. Within the genre, I'd say that my favorite game was probably The Last Express, with The Longest Journey being a somewhat distant second. 3. I enjoyed Hithchiker's Guide, but I don't even think I'd put it in my top 5 within the genre. Suspended and Trinity are probably my two favorite text adventures, with Enchanter, The Witness, and Beyond Zork taking the lower three spots. I enjoyed Leather Goddesses of Phobos, but I suspect that it wouldn't hold up were I to replay it as an adult. 4. I never played Freespace 2. I wonder if it's available on GOG? 5. I loved Civ 2, and one of my all-time-greatest computer gaming moments happened while playing this game, but I preferred Civ 3 (with it modified such that courthouses kept corruption down to a reasonable level in the further flung reaches of my empire) 6. Portal was a lot of fun. It's definitely a game that's going to be rightfully looked back on as a classic. 7. I never played Planetfall back in the day. I messed with it briefly in college, and thought that it seemed like it would be fun, but I never got around to giving it a serious play-through. 8. Plants versus Zombies is fun, and is probably the best tower defense game that I've played, but I'm surprised to see it in a 10 best games of all time list. Why do you like it so much? 9. Baldur's Gate 2 was a fantastic game. I've been thinking about getting it from GOG and replaying it. 10. I didn't play Fallout when it was new. I downloaded it a while back, and found the interface to be frustratingly clumsy. I'm sure the interface was good when it came out, but it really drove home for me how far things have come in that regard. I still intend to give it a play-through, but for now it's sitting on my virtual shelf.

I was so torn about Alpha Centauri. I have to admit that I found both The Last Express and Trinity a bit dull, for all that they tried (and for all that I can recognize that they're great games); I think I like my adventure games with a bit more broad humor in them.
Dungeon Keeper scores points for a great concept, sadly let down by a weak core gameplay mechanic. And as much as I loved X-COM, I felt about its interface the way you must feel about Fallout's. *grin*
Plants vs. Zombies is on there because it's quite possibly the best example of how tone and polish -- and a focus on a single gripping mechanic, to which complexity is slowly added -- can elevate an otherwise middling game. (Going farther back, consider Tetris.) Angry Birds is another good example. The reaction of my kids to these games no doubt biases me a bit.
(And, yes, not only can you get Freespace 2 from GOG, but the devs released the source code a few years back and consequently it's been actively modded to support modern graphics cards. Check this out: http://scp.indiegames.us/screenshots.php )
So many of my "greatest games" depend on, as you mentioned, great game moments. There's a moment in Freespace 2 (mild spoiler) when you encounter the first Shivan capital ship and realize that it's easily ten times larger than anything you've seen before, and almost everything you've seen already dwarfs your tiny fighter.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who preferred the first Mass Effect to the second, but I enjoyed them both. I haven't played the second Assassin's Creed yet, but I loved the first one, so I'm pumped to give it a shot.
A friend was playing Heavy Rain a while ago, and he really enjoyed it. I managed to watch a fair bit of his playing (right near the end, so I'm not going to say anything about what/who I saw), and it was pretty spectacular-looking, so do keep going with it.

I'm not a first-person shooter fan, and I hate having a lot of buttons and weapons/moves to keep track of. Nintendo does the simple yet imaginative game better than anyone, IMO, and did these better than anything else.

It's been long enough that I don't remember why I didn't like it. MM and Phantom Hourglass are the two Zelda games I haven't enjoyed enough to finish.

It's not horrible, but I find it slow. Maybe it's just the setting but I just couldn't get into the slow pace. I'd say rent it first, you could get through it in a weekend.

Amazon has LA Noire for $45 this week. I am really enjoying it. It's similar to old point and click adventure games as opposed to current day open world sandbox games, so don't go into it expecting GTA 1947. I am not certain there is much in the way of replay value but I am enjoying playing it through once.

1) The Legend of Zelda - I remember being told about naming my character Zelda to jump straight to the 2nd quest so I did that as soon as I got the game. It was 3 or 4 years before I went back and played the first quest. It was like playing a brand new game. I still play back through at least one of the quests about once a year. Perfect as far as I am concerned.
2) Super Mario Bros. 3 - My sister and I would leave our Nintendo on while we were at school in order to not lose our progress when we first got it. I got this game for my birthday the year it came out and played it regularly up until the day I put my NES in storage. I have since bought it on GBA, and Wiiware. I love this game.
3) Sam and Max Hit the Road - Out of all point and click adventure games this one was hands down my favorite and also the funniest. I still quote it from time to time.
4) Fallout 3 - I have more time logged on this game than any other and I still haven't explored any of the DLC. I am hoping to take care of that this summer. I borrowed a copy of Oblivion months before playing this and I just could not get into the medieval setting. It's just not my thing, but I loved walking around in this post-war world and discovering new places all over the map.
5) Ico - I fell in love with this game when it first came out on the PS2 in the states. I love the world, the slower pacing and feeling of loneliness I get when I play this game. By the time Shadow of the Colossus came out I no longer had a PS2 but I look forward to playing it when it's re-released this September.
6) Robocop - The 1988 DATA EAST Arcade Game - It's a phoned in side scrolling action game but I love this thing. Anytime I am in an old coin op arcade or pizza place or whatever I feel compelled to sink my coins into it. A shovelful of nostalgia helps me see past this games shortcomings.
7) Under a Killing Moon - I only recently acquired the other Tex Murphy games on GOG but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. I remember being very impressed with the FMV in this game and loved the setting and nearly everything about it. I wanted to BE Tex Murphy.
8) Rock Band series - It's the only game that my wife asks me to play and it allows me to play with my friends elsewhere. Great way to socialize with friends.
9) King's Quest V - This was given to my by a family friend and it was unlike anything I'd played before. I loved the exploring and even the frustrating trial and error "Try This Thing with that Thing" gameplay. When I Bought the KQ Collection off of Steam last year it was the only game I played.
10) Quake - I spent countless hours in my room in high school deathmatching in Quake. I liked the skin customization made available and everything about it was a blast. It was also the last FPS multiplayer I was any good at. When Quake 2 came around I had gotten too busy to play much deathmatch and in college it wasn't really my thing. By the time I came back to the genre I had been left behind and anytime I jump online in any game I own I get creamed. Quake was my glory days and I still enjoy the Single Player campaign.

I plan to drive 180 miles just to play Gears Of War 3 with my brother when it comes out. The co-op in the last two is so well designed that it accomplishes what Halo never could, its more fun to play the whole way through with two people. It should be a nice bit of marathon gaming come October.

My favorite games of all time are Dark Age of Camelot, Red Alert 2, and Diablo II.
I am enjoying Castle Crashers, Sword and Soldiers, and have a fond place in my hear for Guild Wars.
I just bought Uncharted Waters: New horizon for my Wii and am casually playing as Ali Vezas.
Right now I have 1500 Wii points and am not sure what to buy. Should I get a few 500 wii point original Nintendo titles like Super Mario 3? Maybe Nobunaga's Ambition? NyxQuest on the WiiWare?

RPG - Final Fantasy VI. Edges out Chrono Trigger. I was probably the perfect age for this game. It really hit me emotionally.
Adventure - Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Super Metroid comes in second.
Strategy - Sim City 2000. I sunk SO much time into this game, over and over and over. Civilization 2 as runner up.
FPS - Halo, followed by Goldeneye.
RTS - Starcraft.
Dungeon-crawler - Diablo II. Yes, I added this genre just to include this game. When III comes out I will never be heard from again.
Fighter - Super Smash Bros. Easy to pick up, difficult to master, almost unlimited replay value. Kirby, ftw. Marvel vs.Capcom 2 as runner up.
Flight Simulator - Star Wars: TIE Fighter. I near drove myself crazy beating some of those missions.
Some honorable mentions: Minecraft Super Mario World King's Quest series Pikmin Oregon Trail Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Mega Man X Secret of Mana EVO: the Search for Eden

It is a great game to play with younger nephews. Nothing is quite as rewarding as jumping up and continually hacking a knight as you fly across the screen. How can you not love the level where all the animals are pooping in fear of the end boss?

I really need to try Dwarf Fortress Blayne.

Oh oh oh, I missed Mech Warrior 3...best mech game EVER...you get to build better and bigger mechs as you capture parts, great controls, multiple strategies and a really immersive game world.
DwarfFort is very enjoyable, but has a HUGE learning curve. My problem was that by the time I got really going on this game, they came out with a huge overhaul and I just didn't have it in me to relearn everything. Also, unlike most games, DF has very few goals that are straight forward...it's more of a sim then a game. Sometimes a little direction is helpful.

Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. I'll go ahead and say I enjoyed the first one more too, though I also love the second one. I still haven't beat the second on Insane though, while I've done that multiple times with the first.
Portal 1 and 2. Again I'll prefer the first one, but I did love the second as well.
Knights of the Old Republic. Mmm. I might need to go play this again.
Final Fantasy XII (12, btw, not X-2). The first game I put 100+ hours into, so it has sentimental value, though its not really that amazing of a game.
Medieval: Total War 1 and 2. I personally preferred the first one. I liked the look of the old map instead of the new terrain.
Oblivion. The Thieves Guild final quest is still possibly the most fun I've had playing a video game in one sitting.
Assassins Creed 2. Just a fun game to play.
Bioshock. Funny story. I played this game while leaning up against a cushion that a cat had...erm...urinated on and then been doused in febreeze. And that still didn't detract from the game. And now, whenever I smell cat urine, or way too much febreeze, or some combination of the two, it takes me back to Rapture. In a good way. I think.
Eve Online does deserve a mention, though I sometimes loathe it as well as love it.
And finally...
The Commander Keene series. I think 3 was my favorite. My introduction to the wonderful world of computer games. Though now I'm more of a console gamer, Commander Keene has a special place in my heart.

I'm gonna avoid putting my favorite games in a "top ten" form, mainly because I go through certain moods to play certain things which makes me enjoy/think higher about specific games. There is also the difficulty in comparing games of different genres and also the generation of gamer that I grew up in. I'd also feel like I'd have to write a paragraph/love song about each game if i really wanted to do this proper. So, to keep it short and sweet and to just throw out the most meaningful games to me:
The greatst game of all time is without a doubt Ocarina of Time. Trying to explain the greatness that is this game is difficult because I would simply be saying things like "the story was awesome, the graphics were awesome, the interface is awesome, the asthetics are awesome, etc." It will allways be the benchmark that I will compare the action/adventure RPG to.
The Fanal Fantasy games are a big part of my gaming life. The amount of hours i have put into them is embarassingly high. To me there were only 2 that truely disapointed me(excepting sequels and spinoffs) and that would be FFV and FFXIII. I never liked VI, but not because I thought it was bad... I just couldnt get into it for some reason. VII, VIII, and IX are the ones that mean the most to me and are the ones I enjoy the most.
Super Mario 3 and 64 are pretty amazing games as well. I didnt get into too many platforming types but those two stand out as games that I spent a lot of time on and got a lot of enjoyment out of.
Silent Hill would also have to be on my list of best games. I've never been so unnerved/creeped out/immersed in a gaming world.
Galaga and Golden Axe remain my favorite arcade games, though admittedly i didnt spend alot of time at arcades.
Starcraft and Medieval: Total war 2 are my favorite strategy games.
Of recent games Bioshock and Mass Effect really stick out as games that grabbed my attention and fulfilled my enjoyment.
I should throw EVE in there only because it is so fascinating and has been recently a major part of my time. It is far from being a perfect game... though I'm not sure that any MMO can really compete in any sort of "best game" contest since much of the content (in EVE, an even greater amount) and game experience is user-generated.
I think im going to stop there.... The more games I list the more I remember/think of games that I really liked or had a special connection to. These are just games that make my list without even trying to think.

My friend lent me Bioshock and just said, "You'll like it." So I go to play it...something about the 50's naivete turned sinister, the gore and maniacal laughter just creeped me out major. Gave me nightmares. I stopped playing it almost immediately, and didn't go back and finish it for months.

I can understand that. I think that the artwork and the voice acting, combined with moving through a gameworld in which time was passing and opportunities could be missed really sucked me into the Last Express.

Agreed. If you were mentioning it because of my list, though, I should point out that it was the much older FTL game Dungeon Master that I listed.

:: laugh :: I can completely understand that. If I'd come to X-COM now I'd probably be equally frustrated by its interface. It's incredibly clunky. I much prefer the interface for Jagged Alliance 2. It isn't perfect by any means, but it's better than X-COM's. I always wished that they'd do a tactical, turn-based isometric view dungeon crawl using a modernized version of the X-COM or Jagged Alliance 2 engine.

I can see that. It isn't enough to catapult it onto my top 12 list, but I can understand where you're coming from.

Lol, yeah the story is pretty mediocre in that game, but man that job class system is awesome. Same goes for Final Fantasy Tactics.
I was at my cousins place the other day, and she was playing on her PS3. She had actually gone through the steps to play such an old game on her cutting edge system and shes not even much of a gamer. That says alot for FF Tactics.

Psychonauts has some truly brilliant writing and art direction. Unfortunately, it is tied to a mediocre platformer.
