(This got a little black lock thrown at it last time it came up, but that was before the grist for the mill forum. I think you all know how to play, if you don't just try, chances are you'll get it right.)

Usually, when I write by myself, I know what I'm writing about--not waiting for someone else's word to find out. (By the way, abstruse means 1. hard to understand; recondite; esoteric: abstruse theories. 2. Obsolete. secret; hidden. So, to make any sense, Zero, you "but" is missing a "t" and a plural "s": butts. )

vermiculate is the word I didn't understand. You should consider starting a vocabulary building thread IB. Personally, I thought vertiginous sage was an interesting concept, and I might file it away. I doubt I'll ever have a need for sausage sized robo-hamsters though.

I disagree.

A "but" can separate two apparently contradictive adjectives, happens all the time.

His effective but unorthodox serve is hard to return.

I think extrinsic would be much more qualified in that capacity. And vertiginous was among Robert Nowall's contributions.

Ahh now I get it. I'm responsible for what the dude after me wrote. My bad.

Like how it would be your fault if you took the phrase "He went" and added "there" and I followed you with the word "went" and we collectively crapped out this sentence:

"He went there went." In that case, the fact that it makes no sense, is your fault, all things being equal.

Since there's already a "Writer's Block", let's call this one "Writer's Logic."

Seriously, man. What are you trying to prove by dishing on my word choice? It was fine. Why not admit you're wrong and move on. God knows I have to admit I'm wrong all the time here.

Totally my fault for not anticipating your "but". I'm wrong. It's not your word that makes the sentence lack a key noun, it's mine. I'm sorry. Won't happen again.

PS - Don't worry about it Kathleen. I'll bow out.

(Well, if 'their abstruse but interesting' would have worked, then we should be blaming Robert for adding Doctor! I hereby declare this The Hatrack Blame-Game Thread . Or, if you want to change the rules as we go, instead of adding a new word you could make it that you can change, add or remove one word, and make it The Hatrack Compulsive Editors Thread .)

No I'm the one who should apologize.

I know I hate excuses too but my car's transmission went out (the third in two years) and I've really been blowing off steam at everyone.

So yeah, friends still?

I'll buy you a fake drink using fake money?

PS I never said it was your fault. I just get all tense when people point fingers at me and say "you made a mistake" especially when I don't see it that way. A pretty normal reaction, albeit juvenile. So yeah, once again, I'm sorry.

As for that drink. How about a whisky?
