This morning, my dh came by the office today to tell me our dear cat Angel was killed by a dog this morning. The dog got into our yard somehow and chanced her across the street, where it grabbed her. By the time my dh got out to help her it was already mostly over. He took her to the hospital anyway. The vet said it was probably quick and painless--a broken neck.

I feel horrible for my dh, who had to see it happen. He was really her special human; she would try to lure him into the bedroom so he would lie down and let her sit on his chest. I have four other cats, and I’ve lost countless others--to disease, car accidents, or just old age. This is the first I’ve lost to a dog. I’m angry at the dog, even though it was just following its instinct. I’m angrier at the owner for letting the dog out, or not securing it properly.

Anyway, she will be missed. She had ridiculously large paws, claws that were way too sharp, and the softest fur. She was also very grumpy and fussy, but that’s what made her so special to us.

One thing I won’t miss--the mice she used to bring home. Well, maybe I’ll miss that a little bit.

I'm sorry. It's never easy to lose a loved pet and still harder when it happens like that. How horrible for your husband to have to see it.

It may seem like too little too late, but make a report to animal control. Especially if you know where the dog lives or who owns it. It won't do a thing for Angel, but it may save some other cat or small dog.

Rest in peace, Angel.

i am sorry for your loss.

i remember when my cat died, well murdered.

my druken stepdad took her to the vet one day when we were not home and had her put to sleep. his excuse... she was ****ting, and pissing everywere. which was not true, he was the one getting drunk and pissing everywere. and my cat only went in the litter box.

yet another reason i am going to end his life. that drunken bastered.

My sympathies. When I was a kid, we used to have a vicious dog---bit three kids in the neighborhood, none of them me or mine---living next door. (Till the guy who owned it took it somewhere and "lost" it.) It was always wandering around loose, despite being tied down.

Our cat in those days (male, unfixed) would wander through the yard unconcerned. We were fairly sure the dog would come out the worse for it in any fight---our cat regularly chased much bigger dogs out of our yard. But if it hadn't, well, I'm fairly sure my mother would have killed the dog and / or the neighbors.

I'm really sorry for your loss. It's hard enough to say goodbye to a pet when they're older and it's their time. To lose a dear one suddenly is heartbreaking. Take care.
