This east coast chain is a success because it deserves to be. OK, maybe the entree fish isn't as exquisitely prepared as the best salmon in Seattle or practically any fish in the great L.A. restaurants, but I go there for the appetizers and the clam chowder anyway. Their popcorn shrimp is very good with the traditional red shrimp sauce — but try their mustard mayonnaise dip. I know, I hate mayonnaise, too, but this is a happy surprise.

Don't stop there, though. Their crab cake is excellent by itself, but it shares a plate with a tiny delicious corn-stuffed tomato and an excellent field-green salad. And the fried shrimp wontons (you can get them steamed if you like, but you can also stay home and eat oatmeal) are wonderful. These three appetizers have kept me from ordering the crab claw appetizer — even though I love crab claws, and even though these are very good. (I admit, though, that they aren't as good as the chilled crab claws at the Fish Market in Atlanta, back when that restaurant was at Lennox Square Mall.)

Recently I've taken to sharing double orders of all three of these appetizers with my dining companions and then eating nothing but the clam chowder for my entree. I end up perfectly satisfied and feel as though I've had the best the restaurant has to offer.

We always go there early, so I have no idea if there's ever a wait later on. There are people dressed in suits, but only because they're on their way home from work. The way I normally dress is quite casual but not out of place here.

Legal Seafood is in the Tyson's Corner II Mall, just off route 123 at the beltway. It has entrances on both the upper and lower levels, but the upper level, directly where the valet parking is located, contains only the bar; the lower level, with covered parking, puts you right at the restaurant. (Tyson's Corner II is the mall with Macy's. If you're at the mall with movie theaters or Lord & Taylor or Hecht's, you're at Tyson's Corner I. You have to cross busy highway 123, but there it will be in all its pretentious glory, the really expensive mall. But you'll want to know this location because it's also where you'll find The Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton.)
