I guess this thread is turning into how to get reluctant Sci Fi readers to read fantasy.
I just read something in the link on OSC and Tolkein that surprised me. Rowling says she was inspired by Lewis more than Tolkien. Of course, there is also a whole literary tradition of boardingschool books. Did Lewis write any? I mean, the Pevenses attended boarding school but their adventures happened on holiday, generally. Scrubb and Pole have an adventure while at school, but it's a coed school.
Anyway, I stand by my statement about power. We may be using definitions differently, but the only legitimate way to rule someone else's will is through a shared value. Ideally it would be love, but others do. What I meant by "power" as a negative thing is where influence is held by deception or through a shared vice, such as greed.
Of course, this all reduces to a value judgement, some would say an arbitrary one. And getting back to my point about good and evil, I'd say that power never actually vests in an individual. But people following evil purposes often think it does. For instance, the mob scene with Grego in Xenocide.
