Maybe they do now, in this decadent era of Lite beer, hand calculators, and “user-friendly” software, but back in the Good Old Days Real Programmers wrote in machine code.

No, "real" programmers use Eclipse.

Unemployed programmers use emacs.

I'll third the gVim. At least on Linux, anyways. On windows I tend to prefer Notepad++.

Maybe the real programmers choose the constants of the Universe, before it starts, in such a way as to create the hard disc they want written within a specific time frame for us to enjoy. [Wink]

I discovered the joys of Notepad++ several months ago. Good program, and there's a portable version at portableapps.com (portableapps.com)
