It's really not that indicative, though. The closer to the edges you are, the more representative of actual distances in "interest space," and there are a few fairly invariant groups (like me, Kama, AvidReader and Shawshank), but by in large the answer sets were simply too diverse to represent well in a 2D map. The most egregious is xnera, who in the 2D projection appears to be closest to Farmgirl, but in the actual space is closer to every single other person.
For reference, I've included below a "closest and furthest" for each respondent, along with values so that people can get a general feel for relative differences and distances. If anyone's interested in a complete listing of their distances from other respondents, email me and I'll send it to you.
Maybe after the weekend I'll play with some other options for 2D approximations that might give a more satisfactory result. We'll see. Thanks everyone for responding. ------------ AvidReader Closest: SenojRetep:11.0454 Furthest: aiua:15.4919
I'll post the winning ranking for each question (although most of them have a good enough spread to just read it off the graph), and I'll also post which respondent most closely agreed with the winning ranking. I will then declare that person "Hatrack President." I will also list the "least-agreeable" person and declare them leader of the opposition.

1) Oops, I only recognise three characters. 2) Unfamiliar with 2/5 of the authors 4) Very limiting categories, where's Jazz, Indie etc? 6) I don't really watch TV, but have sen a couple of episodes of the Apprentice UK. 10) I have only heard of Washington and Benjamin Franklin - sorry.

Woo-hoo! Leonide and I are tied for Speaker of the House!

Yep. It's worth noting that this makes Peter the Secretary of Homeland Security (assuming that Leonide and I share the role of Speaker of the House, of course).
[Edit--if there's a run off for the office of Speaker of the House, Peter then becomes Secretary of Veterans' Affairs.]

Just a note on methodology (for Farmgirl and others).
I essentially assigned a value 1-5 to each respondent's choices. So if you ranked Ender as your favorite Enderverse character, he would get 5 points. If you ranked Peter as your least favorite he would get 1 point. Then I just summed over all the options.
The bar charts in the linked chart are the percentages of total points each option got. So for the Enderverse question, Ender got 29% of the total points and Peter got 13.5%
Then I used the point total to create consensus orders for each question (Ender first, then Bean, then Petra, then Alai, then Peter). I then calculated the Euclidean distance between those orderings and the 32 respondents. BlackBlade had the "closest" responses, indicated by his low total "distance."
Hope that helps a little.
P.S. I'll add the new respondents and recalculate a little later.

I'm curious that you told Lisa she is closer to me than anyone else... but we're at opposite ends of the list of closeness to hatrack's center. Posts: 3960 | Registered: Jul 2001

I noticed over the weekend a flaw in my original distance measures. The new data has fixed the flaw. I need to recalculate the distances and the map. Sorry about that.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but it would seem that that kind of arbitrary numbering system would be effectively meaningless for comparison purposes. Unless all As are supposed to be related, all Bs etc then it doesn't seem to really tell anything.
I'm trying to explain my issue with it, but I think I'm just too confused, so perhaps you can clarify more.

Well if we're doing it that way, we might as well establish the Hatrack Cabinet:
BlackBlade, President ClaudiaTherese, Vice President Leonide, Speaker of the House Noemon, President pro tempore of the Senate vonk, Secretary of State Jhai, Secretary of the Treasury Carrie, Secretary of Defense FlyingCow, Attorney General (though really, that should be Dag) JumboWumbo, Secretary of the Interior Mike, Secretary of Agriculture Zevlag, Secretary of Commerce Luet13, Secretary of Labor xnera, Secretary of HHS Qaz, Secretary of HUD Lyrhawn, Secretary of Transportation (yay!) SenojRetep, Secretary of Energy PrimalCurve, Sectretary of Education TL, Secretary of Veterans' Affairs EduardoStElmo, Secretary of Homeland Security.
Now that's using the US Presidential line of succession, assuming we won't disallow US born members.

I only compare "A"s and "B"s within the context of a single question.
So, for instance, if on the first question you responded "1) c,b,d,a,e" (which you did) and the Hatrack consensus was "1) c,a,d,b,e" (which it was) your distance from the consensus would be the square root of the sum of the squared difference of each individual ranking, i.e. the difference between your "A" rank, and Hatrack's, plus the difference between your "B" rank and Hatrack's, plus... In this case it would work out to: sqrt((2-4)^2+(4-2)^2+(5-5)^2+(3-3)^2+(1-1)^2) = sqrt(8) = 2.83. I then sum the individual distances over all 10 questions to get a total distance.
There is something wrong (or, at least, undesirable) about this methodology, and that is that by assigning a value 1-5 to each ranking I'm assuming a strength of preference. Additionally, by weighting each question equally, I'm not taking into account that some questions are more or less meaningful to individuals or the community.
To address the first, I could use a non-Euclidean distance measure (such as Spearman's correlation coefficient; I'd link the wikipedia entry, but Hatrack isn't liking it for some reason). This is problematic for the purposes of the 2D projection I've been using, which requires the distance metric to have certain Euclidean-like properties. However, since the projection wasn't working well anyway...
To address the second, I could have had each respondent indicate how strongly they felt about each question, and use that to weight the distances. However, I felt that would unnecessarily complicate the survey.
Honestly, I could go on about this stuff for hours, but I've probably already bored everyone to tears.

What?! I've been booted from office? Well, it's a good thing I left that super-virus in the Hatrack Federal Servers that'll begin circulation as soon as I don't input the secret code at the end of the day.
Also, something in the office has been in the toilet.

Well, vonk. It seems you'd be Secretary of Agriculture... which, by name alone, seems more up my alley. I'll gladly swap with ya.
Wouldn't want any viral happenings, anyway. And, by any chance, was it the toilet brush in the toilet?

BlackBlade, President LaunchyWiggin, Vice President Noemon, Speaker of the House (big promotion considering the President pro temp is more of an honorific than a real powerhouse) ClaudiaTherese, President pro tempore of the Senate FlyingCow, Secretary of State Jhai, Secretary of the Treasury (so far you and Blackblade are the only ones to survive the shuffle in your original spots) TheGrimace, Secretary of Defense Carrie, Attorney General vonk, Secretary of the Interior Zevlag, Secretary of Agriculture Mike, Secretary of Commerce Qaz, Secretary of Labor JumboWumbo, Secretary of HHS Primal Curve, Secretary of HUD Luet13, Secretary of Transportation (ack! I was replaced!) SenojRetep, Secretary of Energy xnera, Sectretary of Education Lyrhawn, Secretary of Veterans' Affairs (whew, I survived) TomDavidson, Secretary of Homeland Security.
There's the new Government, I fixed it according to the new list.

Lyrhawn bumped you out, Leonide. That's politics the American way.
You should be sandwiched between Carrie and TheGrimace, making you Attorney General (and me Secretary of Education, which is ironic since I ranked education as least important on question five).

Given what I'm studying, it's particularly appropriate that I'm Secretary of the Treasury. As my first act in office I'll start minting those Hatrack commemorative quarters I know we've all been lusting after. Shall we have dobie, so*, or onanism first?
Oh, and welcome to Hatrack, Santa34
