Okay...near the beginning of Ender's Shadow (page 78 of the paperback version), right before he attends battle school, Bean is addressed as Haricott Vert. That is the one and only time that name is mentioned through the book. As far as I can see, they don't explain it at all. He's either Bean or Julian Delphiki, both of which are explained in great detail, from then on.
So who gave him the name "Haricott Vert"? Was it the Janitor, or Volescu, or Sister Carlotta?

Hm...I guess that might make sense... Here's the excerpt...
'"...Then Achilles is gone, not another mention of him - did he die? Wasn't she trying to get a leg operation for him? - and it's Haricot Vert who is now her candidate."
"'Bean' is the name he calls himself. Rather as your Andrew Wiggin calls himself 'Ender.'"'
So I assumed Bean would be a nickname, not just a translation.

But it's basically the same thing. It also means string bean, but it's the same kind of bean, so who cares?

I don't remember reading about "Haricott Vert". I guess I missed it... I thought I knew it all. What else did I miss?!?! I think I need therapy...

basicly, its a fancy way of saying she is taking care of him now and Achilles is out of the picture.

Where'd you get that "basic" idea from, not_worth_a_bean? I'm not seein' it... hehehe. I admire those who can take such a specific idea from two simple words...

I think the original person that called him Haricot Vert was, hmmmm, either Graff, Dimak, or maybe Dap.
edit: I found it. It's in one of the conversations that starts out a chapter, and two people are talking about Bean. It's hard to tell who's doing the conversing though. I think it's Anderson(?) talking to Graff.

Ahh, it makes more sense now. I didn't know you were refering to dialogue - I thought you meant that "Haricott Vert" was mentioned only by OSC in a paragraph, not in speaking...I understand.
