Rereading the Alvin Maker series and coming across two peculiarities about Margaret's delving into Alvin's future that combine interestingly.

1. She sees no future in which he does not fail in his life's work and die early.

2. She cannot see futures that branch from Alvin's makery.

Doesn't this seem a set up for Alvin to escape number 1 by route of number 2?

No. Alvin is going to die in the next book.

Well, he's got to die some distance from the end, because there's a lot that has to happen after he dies and my gut feeling is that Card won't just sum all that up, Animal House-style. But I don't know how long the book will be, of course. Assuming a 400 page book, I'll guess page 355. [Smile]

Hm . . . but there's a different number of pages between hardcover and paperback. We may need to make two t-shirts.

I love the way OSC puts foreshadowing into his books that turns out to be wrong. He'll make declarative statements like "He was sure he'd never see her again," that turn out not to be true. Or he'll have a character knowing without a doubt that something is true (and we believe it too), and then he'll show why it's not true. Most writers either foreshadow or don't, but they don't take the time to foreshadow things that turn out differently - just like real life does to us, sometimes.

In the Alvin Maker books he has had Peggy see futures and then Alvin does something that opens up a whole new array of futures that were not even possible before. So it's possible that she's as much in the dark about his future as the rest of the world. It's highly likely that Alvin WILL have to die before the end of the series (especially considering whom his character is loosely based on!), but just because it's been foreshadowed doesn't mean, in OSC's world, that it has to be.

Also, just because Alvin dies doesn't mean that he's failed his life's work.

You could just say "near the end of Chapter x "...

If Alvin's life is indeed based on the life of a certain religion's founder, Alvin has to die in the next book.

Except that OSC has been saying for years in interviews that his design has been, all along, to leave Alvin dead and bleeding in a street in Carthage. He doesn't keep that a secret. [Smile]
