Of all of the travesties OSC has committed I have not heard anyone mention the worst one of all……

Bean never got any nookie!!!

In his Shadow series Bean took at least as much crap as Ender ever did. He subconsciously gave Ender the solution to beating the Formics, survived innumerable hazards as a frail child on the streets of Rotterdam, bested psycho-boy Achilles umpteen times, secured Ender’s financial assets for thousands of years, bumped Peter’s bum into Hegemony, helped bring world peace, and, oh, then gets blasted into space destined to croak horribly after teaching a few of his kids the hard knocks. All the meanwhile Petra is back on Earth hooking up with Peter and making babies the good old fashioned way.(Blegh!) We’re supposed to take that the whole time in his stressful, but meaningful, life he never got freaky?!! You have written that it’s the best part of making babies after all.

I beseech you, Mr. Card, please give consideration in correcting this devastating oversight. Perhaps you can include a flashback with Bean and Petra in your upcoming Shadows in Flight in which they get jiggy with it. I would also settle for a revision in future printings.

I hope that all Hatrackers will join me in this outrage.

But seriously, I’m not in agreement with many of OSC’s opinions whether they be online or popping up within his books. I enjoy much of them and if there’s something I don’t like then I don’t read it or at the very least I take it with a grain of salt. I would offer that as a strong suggestion to anyone who has a problem disliking something.

I don’t understand, however, the reason some people feel the need to boycott his works because of his opinions. If you were to do the honest research (assuming that the information is available) on every person involved in everything you read, watch, or listen to so that you can evaluate their opinions compared to your own then I would imagine you wouldn’t be finding very much entertainment at all.

My $.00000000000000000002

A preemptive thank you for the welcome to Hatrack.

And, yes, I know I’m wrong. [Big Grin]

Scott, thanks for all your workings regardless of whether I like them all or not. [Smile]

Nice first post!

Celibacy seems relatively common in Card's characters. I think OSC likes to make a point of the fact that people can have a meaningful life without having sex. He doesn't usually seem to go as far as to portray a happy life without sex though. [Smile] That would be boring.

I'm just glad that his fiction is mostly free of heaving breasts and glistening deltoids.

I thought that Bean and Petra were sleeping together by the time of "Shadow Puppets".

I think the fact that Bean and Petra were married is evidence that they were intimate. In fact, I recall a scene in one of the books when Petra was pregnant and the two of them were traveling and met up in Saudi Arabia or somewhere. There was implied intimacy for sure.

I'm glad OSC doesn't feel the need to add gratuitous sex scenes to his books. A scene like that would completely change the nature of the book, and not for the better IMO. He's too good a storyteller to clog up his stories with prurient (and irrelevant) material.

neo-dragon and maui babe-

I don't recall ever reading that they were intimate, implied or otherwise. I was pretty interested in that aspect of the story and it wasn't because I was looking for a graphic sex scene. I think Card writing a sex scene would probably have to be classifed as the creepiest..thing...ever. [Angst]

I could easily be wrong. I'm listening to the audio version of Shadow Puppets and have Shadow of the Giant ready to go next so I'll keep an ear out. [Smile]

There was a pseudo- love scene when Bean and Petra are in a park kissing in public. I think they were interrupted by Vald telling them to get a room.(or at lest i think it went that way) And I love the scene when Petra is at Ali's compound. Bean isn't sure if she is ok,he comes in and starts kissing her. What I realy whould like to have read is a better goodbye when Bean goes into space. But I understand it had to be that way, short and sweet.I felt like there should have been more.

Shadow Puppets, hard bound, p 125. Read the last line on that page and the first paragraph on p. 126. Then read the last line on page 126 and the first few sentences on p. 127.

What -- was this too subtle for you?

*grin*

The section where Vanya and Katerina are intimate for the first time springs to mind. I certainly did not find it creepy.

There was a line right after they got married and right before she had the embryos implanted that Bean asked here if she wanted to go back to the apartment instead and experience more "Feelings". Does that count?

Wait....I think that's the reference Shan was giving up there.

Anywho, the first part of my OP was intended to be jocular in nature. I guess it's just not that funny if I'm wrong. [Smile]

I seem to remember a sex scene in the book Saints, although I could be remembering incorrectly. I don't think a lot of people have read or have even heard of the book. I enjoyed it. (The book, not the sex scene [Big Grin] )

Well, OSC's texts were not that chaste before. What about one of the final scenes in the Wyrms, an adolescent girl and a monster? Also in Treason there are some pretty erotic passages. What happened? I do not know and don't want to speculate. But I find the boyish attempts (as in the opening of Chapter 17 in SotG)... ridiculous?

One consideration with Bean and Petra is they did not want to conceive naturally, and no method of contraception is foolproof, or even geniusproof. And once the eggs were implanted, they probably would have needed to take it easy for a little while. So I am kind of surprised that there is any reference to sexual activity.

But yeah, lots of his books have plenty of sex scenes, though generally not what I'd call graphic. Though I didn't read Wyrms. I'm not sure which of the co-authors was responsible for that one scene in Lovelock. Some people have reported finding that rather graphic, and I suppose I wouldn't want my teenaged kids to read it.

Lost Boys anyone? Having sex with the wife while the wife is on the phone. I can't help but wonder whether that scene was autobiographical...

Also in Lost Boys in the very beginning of the book "boy" watches his parents from the closet. What about Hart's Hope it's riddled with sexual imagery. Treasure Box gets pretty sexual too. None of the scenes are pornographic but OSC does write sex scenes.

PS Petra and Bean definitively hook up.

In Shadow Puppets, Bean recalls having felt Petra's body beneath his large hands. Also, he implies sex by saying "let's go into the other room and have some more 'feelings.'" A marriage without sex would be just beyond the pale.

Oh wait, OSC did that in Xenocide and Children of the Mind with the Filios De Menci De Christo. :sigh: never mind.

Shadow Puppets, page 126, third para: After knowing Bean's character about as well as one person ever gets to know another person, Petra had been really shy about getting to know his body, and letting him know hers. But here Darwin helped them, for the passions that made species survive helped them forgive each other's awkwardness and foolishness and ignorance and hunger. The next paragraph confirms it. Bean did in fact get some nookie...

Bean even made a risque joke upon entering the room Petra was occupying in Damascus, not knowing that he had arrived in the country or that he would even travel there without Achilles hunting him down while in transit; Petra calls out announcing that she is naked (to keep any good Muslim man from walking in on her nakedness).

Bean enters and replys.

"Thats what I was hoping for"

Yes, Bean "Julien" Delphiki got the bow chika bow wow, much as any man married to any combination of animal mineral or vegetable.

It's a good thing I had the disclaimer in the OP or else I'd just look silly. [Blushing]

I guess I just spaced it or got it mixed up with them not conceiving a baby the traditional way.

I'm still relatively new to Card's books so I'm sure I have many interesting things to look forward to. And I'm sure whatever sex scenes he may have in his books are for the purpose of developing the engaging characters he creates.

Besides, it wouldn't be a proper welcome to Hatrack if I was right, would it? [Wink]

(PS..I'm not exactly 'new' to Hatrack. I've been in lurkerdom for awhile.)

I'm not whistling this because I don't believe in whistling ignorance, but that's not cool. It's barely even coherent. Please remove the comment about "vegetables."
