This is Hobbes' job Chess. You are no smiley master. NO MASTER OF SMILEYS ARE YOU!
Hobbes puts a smiley after every single one of his posts. That's dedication to the smiley, that's a smiley master. And you just come in here and steal his idea? Well no dice man! I hereby refuse to put a smiley in this thread, and will harass any hatrackers who do with IMs until retributions are paid to Hobbes.

Fist: thanks to Jebus for his re-butal of Chess's domain. It is much appreciated and will be rembered.
Second: Jebus is correct, it is not time for a smilie thread - though the time is approaching.
Third: I shall not post here again until it is time, which shall not be long. At that time, I shall post me reasons for why it is the appropriate time. I will also post a series of smilies; but until then...

I do apologize if you feel I was overstepping some boundary Hobbes, but I was bored and noticed that I hadn't seen a smilie thread in a while so... I started this one.I also remembered how much fun the smilie thread was.
I do apologize, but I see no reason to look down upon a thread started by another Hatracker.

First, I'd like to apologize to Chess, I'm glad he started this thread and my previous post should have had a next to it. So this is for Chess: !
Second, it is time for another smilie thread; there's been a lot of talk about the degeneration of this board, how people are being, well...nasty. But now it's simmering down, and that is a perfect time for a smilie thread so another for Chess!
Third:
Fourth: Soon I will post Hobbes's Rules for Smilie Usage, hope you enjoy!

Oh, Tammy, I don't need to be any more relaxed! I'm at work, and nearly asleep as it is!
Of course, it's my own fault - I went to a 9:50 show of TTT, and therefore spent not quite 5 hours in bed. And no, I wasn't able to go right to sleep - I was too keyed up from the movie. So, yeah. I'm tired!
But when you're this tired, the eek smilies are really, really fun, as well as mildly hypnotic.

All right; in this post there will be no smilie graphics as it would exceded the 8 limit (), so you'll just have to pretend that they're there. :D
Now that we have that cleared up let's cover the ground rules: As Papa Moose likes to say, smilies can be over used; but it's hard. They key to using smilies is to make sure that they have a purpose in your post. There are two purposes that they can fulfill: Indicating mood/tone/emotion of your statment and as actual statements. The latter is much rarer, but isn't that uncommon. For insatnce; a post like this: "I just got married!" could be responded to with this: :D:D:D:D:D:D! And that would be an acceptable response.
To use your smilies correctly you need to be framilar with them; so lets get started!
:) The basic smilie, it connotates happieness, good times, or an elevated mood
;) The winking smilie, one of the most common as it tells the reader that the previous statment was either a joke, and exageration, or somthing simalr. It takes the place of "j/k" and can be instrumental in realizing that someone wasn't insulting you, they were just joking!
:( The sad smiie, hopefully you wont use it to often. The meaning (obviously) is that you are depreseed, or that something bad just happened to you.
:o The embareessed smilie. This one can be a dificult one since the graphic looks more like a talking mad smilie. So rember, red doesn't mean angry! This one isn't used as often, but can certainly get across an emotion!
:D The big grin, perhaps the most common smilie on this forum. It means that you are really happy, you just ahd a great day and you're ready to share it with the world. We at Hatrack like to see this smilie.
:p Sticking out your tongue. This one is usually used in compliment with, or in place of, the ;) For instance: "The last time Bob left his house he was attacked by a T-Rex" could be followed by either, or both (:p ;)) and adds a bit of fun to your post.
 This one seems to have gone out of style latley, and is most often used a statment (i.e. "I just got a new cat!" "") but it still has it's purpose.
:rolleyes" This is most often used when dealing with someone's silly comment (that was most likley followed by a :p or ;)) or having to deal with stupid people outside of Hatrack (since there's none inside :)).
 Normally used when someone makes a surprising or odd comment, it's graphic is one of the funnest;)
 This one (like ) is most often used as a statment, if someone starts off a thread with "Jelly Beans will one day rule the Earth!" the  smilie comes in handy.
 This is a very common smilie, normally having to do with something that has happened to you that you're relating to the Hatrack community, it certainly lets you vent!
So there are the smilies. Keep in mind what each of them means when you use them. Please don't them in an insult ("I've noticed that you've gotten stupider ____ :) I think that you are a **************! :)) as it really degrades the smilie. Thanks-you for your time and :D:D:D:D:D!

Sorry Moose, I meant as Papa Moose says "Smilies can be over used". However it's hard to do so. I suppose you disagree with the second part but....

Hmmmm, I was thinking about doing a smilie wrap-up for the new ones. Kind of year end evalutation but with the recent smilie scandal I figured I'd wait until it wasn't a hot button topic for politics. Perhaps when it slipped off the media's radar screen I'll return to it.
