I am happy Cruz is running hopefully that will keep the terminator out of politics and also get Gray Davis out of office.

What qualities do you see in Bustamente that would make him a good Governor?

*scratches head* Isn't Cruz Bustamonte the, uh, vice-governer? How is he running?

He's lt. gov.

There's nothing that says he can't run -- it's like a standing senator running for president. Plus he and Davis hate each other so it's not like he would refuse to run out of loyalty to Davis.

O.K. California is not my state so I have only been following this peripherally, but I have yet to see him declare that he was running anywhere. Also, it was my understanding that the Democrats were going to only field Gray Davis. Now, I see from your link in the other thread that there are 4 already lined up ready to run and some hundreds possibly waiting in the wings....

I'm really confused. Did Terry McAuliffe and the DNC change course? Are the four Democrats rogue elephants or something, or are they going to do like one guy I heard about and step down as soon as they are elected so Cruz can be governer. Who are the 2 Republicans that are running?

By the way, the reason why I thought Cruz couldn't run is because of the remarks of the guy who was going to step down. I think I also heard something in the news about it. Hmmm. So, you're saying Cruz can run?

The official DNC stance, I believe, is to keep the ranks in line and try and defeat the recall. Thus the current Dem candidates are rogue candidates, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them got/or get a wink and a nod from prominent Dems -- although I don't think Bustamonte was one of those that got or will get the hidden sign. It looks like he's just a rogue.

Zalmoxis asks what qualifies Cruz Bustamante to run for governor. Well, he has been lieutenant governor for almost six years. He was at one time Speaker of the Assembly. He has a pretty good rep, in this area at least. This is significant, as Fresno is a pretty conservative area. Of course, Cruz is from this area, so that might have something to do with his reputation around here.

My own favorite reason for him being qualified to be governor is something I witnessed personally. He happened to be in a local buffet restaurant with his family when I was eating there one afternoon (this was awhile ago, I think when he was Speaker of the Assembly). At one point his cell phone rang, fairly obviously a business call, by his behavior. He listened to what the caller wanted and then said soemthing to the effect of, I'm with my family right now, and I'll call you back later. And he hung up and enjoyed his meal with his family.

This all impressed me for several reasons. Number one, he was not shy about telling the caller that it was family time and he would conduct business later. Number two, even though he was in one of the most powerful positions in state government, he was eating in a regular restaurant instead of some upscale place that I assure you he could afford. Number three, he did not walk around acting all important and exuding that political "look at me, how cool am I" attitude. That is all too common around this part of the country, even with low-level folks like city councilpersons. I would not have known who he was had I not recognized him from his appearances on the news.
