Author Topic: Jatraqueros and their world views....

I was thinking about this the other night in the chat room.... Why is it that when I think about long-time Hatrackers, some I have come to associate with fairly clear and consistent views of the world, and others I remain clueless as to how their different ideas connect together to any consistent view of things? Take, for instance, Anne Kate: Over time I have come to associate her with certain ideas that seem like they fit into a very consistent pattern of thinking. The same themes come up again and again in her posts. Her ideas have a certain feel to them. Although I know I could never put it into words, I have a sense of what an "Anne Kate Philosophy of the World" might be like. This is the case with a whole bunch of Jatraqueros. In my mind there is a certain view of the world associated which each of those who fall into that category - whether it be gentle optimism, harsh pragmatism, naive idealism, etc. These can change or evolve over time, but they seem to flow in a consistent manner across time.

But then again there are just as many Jatraqueros who post just as much in serious topics, and yet with them I still can't figure out how their thinking fits together. By this I don't mean I think their views are dumb or inconsistent or something. I mean that I can't quite figure out how to put it all together. I know they have a collection of opinions on matters, but I don't see the world view in which all those opinions are founded. It's like there is no "fingerprint" on their ideas that I can find.

Why is this?

Someone suggested it was just that they didn't post as much, but I don't think that's the reason. Some people show up as newbies and it's immediately clear after a few posts what their view of the world is. Or maybe I just don't have the right radar in my mind to see their "fingerprint" or how their world view comes together. I'm not sure really.

Anyway, just a comment.

Hah! Tres, that's cool! I have a consistent philosophy? Can you tell me what it is? This is great! [Smile]

Anne kate, I'd say your philosophy is mostly about caring about everyone, no matter what.

I don't follow serious threads much, and almost never post in them, because I don't have a lot of my own philosophy worked out yet, but I have noticed the same trends you have, Tres.

Ni!

I've always considered myself a radical moderate.

I'm a proponent of the ad hoc school of philosophy.

How odd it would be if someone had been on a forum for a number of years and the other posters didn't know their view of the world.

Stormy, do you know mine?

I'm just wondering, because I've been dismissed out of arguments at Hatrack as both too liberal and too convervative to have a valid opinion.

Maybe it's easier to understand the philosophies of people who's ideas you relate to and agree upon. When there are cracks in the presentation it's easier to flesh out by adding your own, similar take.

I'm sure the LDS around here have an easier time of understand other LDS world views (though I understand that they are not cookie-cutter), because they're more likely to know the sources and culture from which these ideas sprouted. Etc...

Kat, I don't mean that it would be odd if people didn't have an exact understanding of a long time poster's world view. I meant it would be odd, to me, if people didn't have an idea about it. I also think it would be odd if the world view that a person actually had, differed significantly from what another poster thought.

Perhaps odd is the wrong word? Maybe..sad? That's not right, either.

I'm with Tres. There are actually many posters on this forum who have been on this forum longer than I have, but because they either don't post a lot or just confine themselves to 'this is my kid, ain't he cute' kind of stuff, you don't really know what they think about things.

And, yes, I have a general understanding of your world view.

Tres, if you're really brave, you could change the thread topic to "Jatraqueros and their world views...as tallied by Tres"

Good point, Toni. It's always harder to get inside the heads of people you disagree with or who have a different background.

I don't have a world view.

This may or may not be related to the fact that I don't exist.
