Man, I had no idea they'd been together for 45 years. That's damned impressive, considering the "celebrity" factor of their relationship. That's like, one of those incredible hollywood marriages like Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, or Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, or Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. There aren't that many couples that can survive that type of exposure.
And talk about a sucky birthday!

This thread title reminds me of a cat I know. My brother-in-law's family has a cat whose name is, I believe, White Kitty. He's really evil, though, and likes to attack people at random and bite them, so they call him "The White Death". Yeah.

There's a whole debate going on about whether the trainers deserved it for forcing tigers to perform stupid acts all their lives. I say that life (which includes being unabashedly pampered -- have you seen their home + yard? opulent doesn't even begin...) is way better than being extinct, which they almost certainly would be without S&R. By the same token, I don't think any of them would deny that their business has risks. "It's like telling a professional skydiver, hey, you might hit the ground." Comes with the territory, and while that doesn't justify deathwishes against th trainers, it doesn't make the tiger a bad animal.

Yeah, I hope the guy pulls through but I also hope they don't blame the tiger. There's nothing in the job description of tigerhood that says you have to do stage tricks and stuff like that. And being whapped with a microphone? I mean, sheesh, he's a tiger! What did you expect? I feel bad for the guy, though, and hope he lives.
My cat Drive By I adopted when I found her on the side of the road as a kitten after she'd been hit by a car. She turned out to be from a colony of feral cats who apparently lived in the woods nearby. A wild animal is just tempermentally different from a tame animal. Even with all the presumable tame-cat genes that would still be hanging around inside her, Drive By is very wild. She accepts me as her mom, and loves me very much, yet she jumps down and hides when I walk normally into a room (if I don't just creep slowly and softly in) and only comes back out to nuzzle me after I sit down for a while and am still.
When she's sick I can't manage pills or medicine now that she's grown. Thank goodness she's been mostly healthy after her long recovery as a kitten. Once I was able to give her antibiotic shots about four days in a row but by the fifth day she was having no more, and I had to give it up. Dr. George can't even listen to her breathing and heart because she growls constantly while he's got his stethoscope on her. Once when she hid under the bed when he was there to see her, she screamed so loudly when I reached in to get her that it seriously frightened me. She's a small cat but I felt sure she would take my arm off if I tried to reach in and get her out. He said we ought to give it up.
He's been the vet for zoo cats, too, and so we treat Drive By sort of like a small zoo cat. I guess we just won't treat her with anything invasive unless she gets too sick to fight us over it. I routinely joke if he brought the tranquilizer gun whenever he comes to see her.
But this same cat is the most loving, sweet, gentle animal with me at normal times. She likes to curl up on my side when I go to sleep, because she loves the warmth. She purrs and rubs her face on my face and neck, and licks my cheek or nose with her raspy tongue until it feels raw. She adored Brando, and would curl up with him and lick his ears and head for him all the time. It's only that all our dealings must be mutually consensual. Forcing her into a carrier, say, or to swallow a pill or take a shot, is just not something she will accept. She's not someone's property, she's a free being. She does what she sees right, and can't be forced to do things. She belongs to herself. She's free.
When you associate with a wild animal, you understand and accept the risk. If Drive By weighed 1000 pounds and had even more wildness genes in her than she does, I don't think I could possibly think about keeping her. That's why I hope they don't blame the tiger, or destroy it.
