The snow that I know awaits me is just about the only thing I'm not looking forward to about Christmas break this year.
It may be way too hot for late November here in Houston (a high of 81? What's up with that?), but at least it's not snowing.

Pfft. It started snowing a few weeks ago here in Edmonton. It's not snowing at the moment, but it's extremely cold, and the snow of days past is now turning into solid ice, which makes driving quite an adventure.
I hate snow, and winter. Snow is really nice when it's a rarity, but when you have to live with it for 4-5 months of every year, you get sick of it pretty fast.

I'm just hoping to get a break on the snow for our visit to my family over the Christmas holiday. We're driving from Chicago to Rochester, NY and back again. Most of the drive is very close to the shorelines the Great Lakes.
So far, we've been lucky. We had to delay our return to Chicago by 2 days two years ago due to heavy lake effect snow. We were getting ready to plan an alternate (and longer) southern route when the snow let up.

I hate snow, but I love the poem. Based on my memory, the only flaw I saw in your recitation is:
"The darkest evening of the year."
And I think it's "wood" instead of "woods" in the second stanza, but I wouldn't bet anything too valuable on it. I'm so glad to share a forum with Frost-o-philes.
[edit: I just looked up the original, and it is "woods", like you said. Good on ye, mate.]
1. "Vacation" means going to Calgary for the weekend.
2. You measure distance in hours.
3. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.
4. You know several people who have hit deer more than once.
5. You use a down comforter in the summer.
6. Your grandparents drive at 100 km/h through four meters of snow during a blizzard, without flinching.
7. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.
8. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
9. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled.
10. There are two seasons: Winter and construction.
11. You are bundled up in three sweaters, a parka, ski pants, a touque, two pairs of mittens, boots past your knees in 3 feet of snow in a -35 (-8000 with the windchill) blizzard, your eyelashes are frozen together, your nose is running, you can't feel your toes, and you still stop at 7Eleven for a Slurpee on the way home.

Loved that one Fitz. Everything on that list is true for me also, except for going to Calgary for vacation, we go to Billings.

Speed: I thought there was something wrong with "coldest evening of the year"... Aw well. ^_^ Thanks for the help. I'm glad to see another Frost-lover around here.

"Fire and Ice" sort of fits, what with ice and snow and cold and ick and the end of the world all being very closely related.
quote: Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice.
And Fitz, all of that works for Michigan too (except the Calgary part).

I like snow. We only get it every couple of years where I live.
On a mostly unrelated subject, Ophelia's post about it being hot in Houston reminds me of when I had a water balloon fight with my siblings on Christmas Day in Hawaii

You drop white glitter from the heavens. It kisses my face with such gently cool touches. Smiling brightly, I stand with my eyes closed. Embraced.
In the morning, I rise to see the beautiful spread You've cast out to greet me. Solace, peace cross my face As I gaze out the window.
As I ready myself for the day, (scarf, gloves, hat) I wonder what message it is you send That one has to protect themselves from the cold of such beauty granted to us.
