Check it out, Penny arcade ran quick strip about the Ender's Game Movie...

For those sensitive people at home, be aware this does contain some profane words.

Silly Tycho. He should think about this — Warner Bros just hired Monolith founder Jason Hall to head their brand new games division, and they're going to be needing a high-profile, high-quality title to launch the new label. I personally can't think of a better choice than Ender's Game, but maybe that's just me [Smile]

He's giving up too quickly. I think we should wait to see how it plays out ...

A high-profile title, at least. The history of the video game industry has shown that game's don't need to be great in order to sell...

I'd actually be a bit nervous about an EG game.

Me too. Unlike Star Wars, they won't get 100 chances to make 10 good and 90 horrible games.

Ender's Game has always struck me as a little to cerebral to turn into a game. Now William C. Dietz work on the other hand...

The only EG-related game property that makes any sense is a 3D space strategy game, similar to Homeworld. Or possibly the Giant's Drink, but I don't think programmers are up to that standard yet. [Smile]

A battle room sim might work also, sort of a squad based combat but in 3D.

If the technology was a bit more advanced we could have a sort of zero-g counterstrike with forty people per team. Now that would be awesome. But then again there are problems with how to make the battles as interesting as possible as well as keeping people from going completely vigilante. You have to make people co-operate.

Shh. We're working on that [Smile]

I don't know about what Tom said, though ... with an innovative enough control scheme, I think you could create online battles set in the Battle Room, similar to those in Battlefield 1942.

Yes, that was the word "battle" three times in one sentence.

I think you could also do a pretty good kids' game set within Battle School, much the way the Harry Potter games are set within Hogwarts.

That's so funny, Geoff, as soon as I read the article I was about to post that Ender's Game would be fun to play Harry Potter-style.

Me=Didn't like Harry Potter games.

Must have just been me. Though, a battle room sim that doesn't revolve around Ender (Tournaments?) might be nice to play, maybe throw in some Fantasy Game mini-games, but.... I can't see Ender's Game making a great video game.

I'd buy it anyway.

I think an Ender's Game - uh, game - would be a really, really stupid idea.

I'd buy it.

I thought I read an article by OSC saying that they are going to make a Battle School game. Or, at least, it was as sure as the movie was at the time, and this was maybe six months ago.

I don't think I'd be very psyched at all to play a six-to-nine-year-old soldier shooting at other six-to-nine-year-olds with what amounts to a flashlight.

Doesn't matter anyway-- my low-end system won't be be able to run any video game that comes out.

*shrug* I'm not remotely interested in a Battle School game. While zero-G space combat might be interesting, there are plenty of other settings that would be able to do that kind of thing better.

The execution of a Battle School game -- with ladder tournaments and the like -- would have to be really, really good in order for me to pay any attention to it. That said, if the AI were good enough, it might make an interesting squad-based game. But it would have to be a stellar example of a shooter in order to get me to pay attention.

--------

Geoff, the idea of a "Harry Potter in space" adventure game set in the Battle School would be intriguing, but it would have to stray pretty far from the source material -- especially if it intended to appeal to the same age and demographic. Hacking desks and the like offer obvious challenges (and, obviously, you'd have plenty of opportunities for mini-games), but you'd have to come up with a PLOT that moved at adventure-game speed.

But see, Harry Potter doesn't really move at adventure game speed...you're not always running for your life or fighting a bad guy -- they made up these "challenge rooms" that are completely not in the books at all to act as a sort of space-filling challenge until they got to the actual baddies -- the spider, voldemort, etc. And I think if they could do that effectively and not annoy the heck out of me cause it was so far from the actual happenings of the book, then they (they being nameless faceless video game creators [Wink] ) could do it for Battle School, too. Have a zero G battle or 2, a couple of levels of the fantasy game, all kinds of stuff keeping the player interested between actual "baddie" attacks...Bonzo, the Giant, Mazer (?), the Buggers....

i don't know.

methinks i have put too much thought into this
