As most of us have come to discover, overall "moods" at Hatrack are, indeed, cyclical. A topic will emerge that will drag much of the community into heated, often angry debate, during which many posters will threaten to leave and everyone is generally unhappy. Shortly after, several "fluff" threads will emerge to lighten the mood and cheer everyone up, many of which are quite witty and enjoyable. Eventually, though, the substance of such fluff threads begins to deteriorate, until 90% of what's being posted are variations on this:
As the intellectual debate tapers off, posters begin to complain about how "boring" Hatrack has become, and how much they miss the "good old days", where OSC and TomDavidson would sit around a fireplace in long-tailed coats and smoke pipes, occasionally posting a highly intelligent, biting piece of criticism, often using the phrase "my good chum". Finally, an issue of nationwide importance and extreme polarizing ability will come along and rile everyone up, at which point the cycle will begin again.
Personally, my favorite times at Hatrack are the climaxes of the arguments, when opinions and drama are really whizzing around, and the wonderful bits of witty humor that immediately follow. And the best post-drama humor, in my opinion, was always from a certain poster named after a young boy who once picked his nose till it bleeded.
And so, sing it with me now, fellow Jatraqueros....

Moi? I can't even hope to come close to the hottieness that is Ralphie!
It's like when you get those baggies of trail mix, and you're all excited that it has M&Ms instead of just crappy barks and twigs, and you spend all day thinking about how great those M&Ms are gonna taste... and they end up being Dots, the cheap, tasteless knockoffs of M&Ms that do, indeed, melt in your hand.

She still has my copy of the "Hitchhiker's Guide," which at this point is of no consequence.
Anyway, it's interesting to see exactly how this place has altered in its... company, or whom it lacks. I have an old research thread (that I'm sure has been deleted by now) that had a list of all the chaps that had disappeared along with their email addresses. It would take a long time to put that together again, and I don't have anymore time.
There's that one. It's not yours, but it's similar...
But, here is a great historical thread you started that continues to be one of my favorites. It has snippets of the "WWW" thread. In fact, I think I'll bump it in honor of your visit this evening.
