This isn't something I'm familiar with, though I get the sense I should be, somehow. Is a Shinda a good thing or a bad thing?

what's a good thing to bring to a Shinda, assuming it's a good thing?

rivka,

it's a little disconcerting to be invited (theoretically) to an event you aren't familiar with, attended by people you aren't familiar with, no?

*grins in an overly-familiar manner*

I spose so. I know I was very nervous before my first Shinda. But it's great fun!

I was just waiting for you to ask. [Evil]

A Shinda is simply a SoCallian Jatraquero get-together. [Smile]

SoCallian = of or pertaining to Southern CA

Jatraquero = Hatracker

Primal,

I find internet searches to be a little cold and often not that informative, educational, challenging or growth-worthy ('cept in composing a good "join")

"shinda is a BBQ"

or

"fallow is a wife-beater cuz he doesn't rely on google to think for him"?

I still get tripped up on jatraquero. J will always be a y and not a dz in my head. Shinda does sound like an event with bongos and mushrooms or something.

Um, in the word "jatraquero" the "j" is neither a "y" nor a "dz." It's an "h."

Shinda!

Welcome. There's a new poster thread over on the other side (the one marketed under OSC's moniker). That's the appropriate place to appear, in polite society.

or, if you want to uh...

*snorggle gorggle snorrgle CLINTON! gorggle*

That's just fine and dandy around here.

fallow-
A year ago this month, we So Cal folk were graced by a visit from Ralphie. She suggested a get together and called it a "shindig".
I decided to make the menu a selection of local favorites: taquitos, enchiladas, etc. and for dessert, a tres leches cake.

I went to a favorite bakery and ordered the cake and asked the girl to write "Hatrack Shindig". Her English was rough, so I wrote the words very carefully, then had her repeat them. Alas, fate stepped in and when I picked-up the cake, it read "Hatrack Shinda". I was running late and I found a certain humor and charm in the error. Also, I figured that if every other of my conversation starters bombed, I could always tell the story of the cake.

Of course, the company was so good and the conversation so easy that we almost forgot to eat the cake. When I opened it up, Ralphie and Moose laughed and said that it was a great name for our gathering. Mike and all the rest of the gathered, agreed.

When Pop called the gathering at his house a Shinda, it was official for all Jatraquero get-togethers in SoCal arranged through Hatrack.

Noteworthy of a Shinda:
Food
Drinking of both soft and hard beverages
Laughter
Casual clothes
Children invited

Everything else is play it by ear.

(editted to give fallow his identity [Smile] )
