If you're a mafia player and haven't read Discworld, go do so now. I'm itching for a Discworld mafia game, and don't want people who normally love mafia games left in the dark.
For those of you who have read the books but never played mafia, how would you feel about a discworld mafia? The reason I ask is that Tom mentioned Discworld mafia would be fun, and I agree that it would be an awesome setting for a mafia game.
The more people who have read Discworld, the better.
Also, would anyone be willing to Moderate a Discworld mafia?

Actually, for mafia games you usually create your own character. And since Discworld is so vast, creating your own character would work tons better.

I've been wanting to get in on a mafia game, but haven't found a decent write-up of how the game works or what the rules are. Can someone point me to a link for this so I can prepare for the next game?

Already on it, Nathan. After the picnic last Saturday I was quite excited to read them. I went to the library this week and checked out three of them (including Mort--which is the one Nathan suggested I start with, Paula). I haven't started reading yet, but as soon as homework stops demanding all of my attention (probably later this week) I will.

I would be happy to mod a Discworld game. It is, in fact, one of only two types of Mafia game that I might consider moderating.

I'd love to play, though I've never played mafia online before.
The first discworld book written is The Light Fantastic, but I would recomend starting with Wyrd Sisters or Guards Guards.

Yes, Colour of Magic is the first one. But there is no need to read these books in order. It's not a series at all.

I'm interested in moding again soon since I really enjoyed this time. Not that that means anyone else is intersted in playing a game moded by me... but anyways. I haven't read discworld, and would most likely base my game on something else. What schedual are you looking at for this game?
A completely story-less game. No hints. No death scenes. A quick-and-dirty "X is killed by mafia. X is killed by lynching. Next turn."

Actually Tom, in Little mafia on the Prairie we used no clues to point to anyone's guilt or innocence until their death scenes. It was remarkably equal, no matter what Zan says.
And your second mafia choice has very cool possibilities. Speed mafia. Get it done in an afternoon.

But it was, celia. If I give one little hint based on your profile, you're out on day one. This way, people had to really work to find out if you are evil or not.
I'm still trying to figure out how you made it to the end.

Personally, I'd be all for just creating your own characters. Seriously, Discworld is so big in terms of what you can be. It's vast! Incredibly vast! A vast, ye mateys!

Well I've only read the first 8 books or so, but I'll try making a character. At the moment I'm thinking some kind of three legged pirate whose only form of communication is his dead parrot.

Never played Mafia before, but anything Discworld gets my attention...
I'd suggest making a list of major Discworld characters to be off-limits, because a) too great a chance of someone playing a major character to do something out of character, to be immediately pounced on by obsessive Discworld fans b) too many immensely powerful characters c) modder might need them for NPCs d) too easy
Secondary characters would be fair game, but it would be more fun to make them up, I think.
The books tend to go in runs, and while they don't need to be read in order certain related ones read better that way. Here's a slightly dated reading guide.

I think the only two relevant complaints there are a) and d), Chris, and I think the difficulty of a) gives the lie to d).

I agree with ChrisBridges. Major continuing characters (ie those who have appeared in two or more books and are still living on Discworld) should not be used as player-identities; they should only be killed by Pratchett himself. And they are too useful as characters to be used by the moderator and eventual co-moderators to give clues and to move the storyline along.
Rincewind, Dibbler, Death, the Librarian, Cohen the Barbarian, GrannyWeatherwax, Magrat, Verence, NannyOgg, Albert, JasonOgg, SeanOgg, Detritus, Vetinari, Susan, RegShoe, Ridcully, the Dean, the Bursar, PonderStibbins, Casanunda, Vimes, Carrot, Angua, Nobby, Colon, Gaspode, Quoth... ...which still leaves lots and lots of characters to choose amongst; and that list is incomplete. Plus there is still the option of creating a character.

How could one kill the Death of Rats? And while certain people and talking animals of Discworld can understand the Death of Rats and the Librarian (very expressive body language), the only things DiscworldMafia players would hear are "oook" and "squeak".
