I think that's a good result. The Liberals can't sit back on their laurels anymore. They actually have to start working with the other parties, and actually getting stuff done. (Who'd have thought?)

I'd pick the liberals over the conservatives 6 days a week and twice on Sundays. So I guess it's good the vote wasn't on Sunday because it isn't legal to vote twice. Mind you, I didn't vote liberal.
Anyway.
It'll be interesting to see what happens between the liberals and the NDP. The liberals will need NDP support if they want to control parliament, which will pull them even more to the left. Socially I'm fine with that but NDP economics are always enough to send people into conniption fits. But it's wonderful for the NDP to get a taste of relevance and hopefully they'll be a viable choice for the whole enchilada someday.
I suppose the grits could look to the bloc, but I don't find that likely. There's too much animosity between the two parties and Duceppe has said that such a convincing win is going to pave the way to another referendum on Quebec sovereignty in 2009. Don't know how much support he'll have. There's a difference between punishing the reds and leaving the country. It's too bad, in many ways a really like Duceppe. He's a smart man and well spoken, not to mention that there are a lot of things in his platform that I agree with. 'Cept that whole separating nonsense. He has said he'll be a responsible opposition and serve Canadian interests, not just those of the bloc. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen but I find myself believing him despite myself.
If only I liked Smiling Jack.
Anyway, woo! No Harper! Go team socialism! And one more hurrah for the next election which will probably be in six months because minority governments so frequently prove to be impotent (Martin's no King if you know what I'm saying.)

I think this was the best result we could hope for. I really didn't want the Conservatives to take power, but I want the Liberals to have some accountability which I think they will due to the minority government.
My riding is currently undecided as the result came down to 32 votes (Liberals just beating out the Conservatives) and will have an automatic recount. This is one of the only 2 ridings that the liberals won in Alberta (both in Edmonton).

I don't think he'll be able to stop much. It's darn close to political suicide to "cave" to the US these days. And can you see Bush making any concessions? Granted, he's actually been kinder to Canada than Clinton was (in terms of complaints to the WTO) but that's a far cry from "working with us."
There's still going to be many mile long lines of trucks waiting to cross the border and there are still going to be slights and snipes tossed from both governments.

Even with the sponsorship scandal and Martin having been finance minister during that, the Liberals are a better choice than the conservatives who would engage in needless military spending when the healthcare system is in massive need of a huge injection of money.
