See -- I've never figured out how they do a fair comparison in these polls.

After all, the COST of going to a movie in 1977 (Star Wars) was less than the cost of going to a movie in 2004 -- so of course it grossed less at the box office. But that doesn't mean less PEOPLE actually went to see it.

Farmgirl

p.s. - I've never seen Titanic

Movies I haven't seen:

  • Titanic (1997) – made a point of not seeing that one, long story
  • Spider-Man 2 (2004) – I’m thinking of going and seeing it, but I haven’t been a big movie-goer lately
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) – the cartoon was perfect already, why go see the re-make?
  • Batman (1989) – I’ve only seen one Batman movie, and it was pretty darn bad
  • Beverly Hills Cop (1984) – zero desire to see this one
  • Rush Hour 2 (2001) – if the first one isn’t bad enough, we’ll create a second one, just in case
  • X2 (2003) – At one point in my life I probably would’ve seen this, but recently I just haven’t been going to movies, and X2 just wont get me there today
  • Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) – Yah, like I need to see this to know our culture is going downhill
  • Mummy Returns, The (2001) – Number one was right on the edge of not being acceptable even as a summer action flick for me, I just wasn’t going to go to the sequel
  • Gladiator (2000) – I’ve kind of lost interest in historic epics about Rome
  • Fugitive, The (1993) – this I actually want to see, I just haven’t
  • Perfect Storm, The (2000) – Battles with the see aren’t my cup of tea
  • Liar Liar (1997) – I can actually vomit on my own now, thanks
  • Planet of the Apes (2001) - …I saw the original…
  • Pretty Woman (1990) – Actually I have no clue why I haven’t seen this
  • Chicago (2002) – I’ve seen the play life, and that was quite enough sexual innuendo and suggestion for me
  • Three Men and a Baby (1987) - I’ve seen the French version…
  • Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) – Guess I wasn’t old enough when it came out, and I haven’t seen it on cable
  • Big Daddy (1999) – Right, I’m going to see this, and then I’ll go ask for unnecessary root canals, and skip the atheistic.
  • Batman Returns (1992) – see above batman comment

Only 9 of the top 100:

26 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
38 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
39 Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
50 Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
52 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
57 Gone with the Wind (1939)
84 Elf (2003)
93 Three Men and a Baby (1987)
96 Hannibal (2001)

I haven't seen 24 of the next 100, and 39 of the rest of the list.

And the thing that makes it more surprising is that my parents didn't like us going go movies. So, "Rocky" was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre (and that was a drive-in). The 2nd wasn't until "Return of the Jedi." came out. It wasn't until my sophomore year of college when I was out on my own that I started going to movies on a regular basis.

[edit: missed one]

Man, I think there were only 7 in the top 100 I haven't seen. ALthough the ones I haven't seen, I have seen at least part of them:

Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Gone With the Wind
Pearl harbor
The Exorcist ( I would have seen it but I fell asleep [Wink] )
Elf (I haven't even seen part of this... mostly because it hasn't been on HBO or video yet)
Passion of the Christ (again not on video or on HBO yet)

What can I say, I have worked in a video store, and a movie theater [Big Grin] . So yeah I am a movie buff.

edit: added elf & passion

Movies I haven’t seen on the adjusted list:

  • Love Story – I guess it just never came up
  • Beverly Hills Cop – no thanks
  • Cleopatra – I’m going to be honest right now and admit I didn’t know it was a movie. [Embarrassed]
  • Airport – Thanks, but no thanks, I’m not seriously opposed to this movie, but it just looks like two hours of my life I would never get back
  • American Graffiti – Don’t know why I have, nor why I would. Kind of a non-entity for me
  • The Robe – I could just watch Ben-Hur again instead…
  • Batman – Batman is actually my favorite superhero, I just am not really into cartoon-movies, at least before the last few years
  • The Bells of St. Mary's - Don’t know it. Again. [Embarrassed]
  • The Towering Inferno – I like stupid movies and all but this is pushing it
  • National Lampoon's Animal House – Kind of a crap cultural icon if you ask me, I’ve seen parts but not the whole thing

Oooh, looks like I'm winning for seeing the least number of movies. And if I checked that list about three years ago, it probably would have been closer to 75% of the released films. I only recently started watching a lot of movies.

I have not seen 40 of the top 100 on the original list. Those that I haven't seen but would like to see are:

5) Shrek 2
19) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
20) Spider-Man 2
21) X2
92) Chicago

Of the rest, I either just don't care, or I actively avoided them for one reason or another. Those I actively avoided were:

27)How the Grinch Stole Christmas
48)Mission Impossible II
53)Terminator 2: Judgment Day
74)Mission Impossible
79)Top Gun
97)Catch Me If You Can

Of the second hundred on the first list, I've not seen 58; of the third hundred, I've not seen 54. But I've seen a lot of others in their places. [Razz]

On the adjusted list, I've only not seen 22 of the films listed.
