I'm currently looking for good webhosting for a client - this is the first site I've designed for someone who doesn't already have server space available. He's a fairly prominent local artist who's had coverage in Southwest Art magazine and has work in a museum in Germany, so I'm expecting a lot of traffic for an image-intensive site. However, his work is monumental sculpture, so there will be very little feedback (no buying prints or anything) and it's not a business-transaction site as much as information and a way to get ahold of him. We won't need more than a couple email addresses and I do all my work via an FTP transfer program, so sophisticated options don't matter much.
The sites I've done to date are all with 1&1, but that's because they were having their 3-years-free special when I signed up.
Does anyone have a service they'd reccommend, and what are the advantages you see? (we're also going for as cheap as possible here)
Input greatly appreciated.

I use PHPWebhosting, which is cheap and does what I need. They don't put a limit on your bandwidth, simply ask that you do not host large file archives on it. Had some downtime early on (unfortunately during the old King Arthur mafia game) but seems better now. I'm sure others will have suggestions. Posts: 5422 | Registered: Dec 2001

Annie, bandwidth is cheap. Go with a service that guarantees a high reliability over one that promises more bandwidth. You probably want at least 3 9's (that is, 99.9%).
Also, one problem with "unlimited bandwidth" services is there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth -- they always have an option to cut you off somewhere, and at least with a "limited" bandwidth host you know where that point is.

I'm quite pleased with my web host, Traxworks.net. I pay $3 a month (or $30 a year) for 250 MB of space and 5 GB of bandwidth, and it goes up to 1500 MB and 30 GB for $15 a month ($150 a year).
They have a 99.9% uptime guarantee and lots of other features, like unlimited POP email accounts, unlimited MySQL servers, and so on. I installed my forum through the control panel, and it was a piece of cake.
The only thing I've noticed that I don't like: I occasionally get a pop-up on my main page (but not very often). If you go with them, do your favorite internet brother a favor and list me as your referral. My referral ID is 3. That's right—just 3. I guess only two other people have signed up for the referral program.

I haven't launched my website yet, so I don't really know how reliable this hosting service is. However, I know at least three other people who uses Dreamhost and they seem very pleased with it.
In the last three months, we have only experienced one 30 minute period of downt time. It was on Sunday morning (like 2:00 am), so it wasn't a big deal. Customer service (24 hr email) responded within four hours.

I should've clarified - phpwebhosting isn't the scam 'unlimited' storage and bandwidth you see. They don't set a hard number, starting you at 225mb storage. As long as you aren't hosting porn/warez/download only sites it's all good. Lots of freebies included. I had some problems in the first few months but now it works great all the time.

I go with www.site5.com for my sites and for all my clients. They've always been prompt to respond to support requests, they're inexpensive and their packages come with the Fantastico installer, which can be quite useful.
