I have a problem and I was wondering if someone could help me decide what to do. Ok, I have this uncle who likes to collect a lot of trinkets and books and stuff. Anyway, he has all this stuff stored in two storage lockers, which he now wants to organize. The thing is he doesn't really have the will power to tackle the job himself and he wants to pay me to help him. The problem is, I know he stores pornography in the lockers, mixed with his other stuff. I don't want to confront him about it, and I don't want him to know I know he has this pornography. What should I do?

Either don't help him, ignore it when you come across it, or talk to him about it. You really have no other choices I can see.

Has he forgotten about the porn?

If he's asked you to help, apparently he doesn't seem to care if you see it or not.

I don't think he's forgotten about it. Also he knows how I feel about pornography. And the religion we both belong to condemns it.

Then I'm missing something - why is he asking for your help?

Go with Dag's advice and just change the subject or politely refuse and say you have other things you need to do.

I saw this episode of the Brady Bunch once where Bobby faked a sprained ankle. You could try that.

He wants me to help organize the lockers, he claims that he needs extra pressure from someone to help him organize it. Also, if I refuse to help I am worried that my parents will start to interrogate me about the subject. (I am 18 (19 next month) and am still at home preparing for my mission, so I definately need the money.)

Truth - "I feel uncomfortable sorting through Grandpa's personal effects. He wants me there to apply pressure to make him do this and I don't like being in that position."

Or ask him if there is anything there that he doesn't want to share with the family....he might get the message...

maybe he took out the porn since he knows you will be there

I'd say just help him out...and ignore the porn if you see it

Here's what you say: "No problem, dude. But do me a favor and clear out all the skanky porn before I put my hands in there, okay?"

How do you know there is pornography there? It seems odd that he would ask you to help if there is something there he wouldn’t want you to know about.

Oooooohh... I have a horror story about this...

I have this friend. This friend has parents. His dad is bisexual. And since I was the ONLY openly gay man (I was only 19 at the time) that he knew of (or most of my friends at that point) he decided to "gift" me with his gay porn collection.... *shudder*

It started out by my brother coming to me one day saying "Chris' dad wants to talk to you". To me? Why for? I hardly know him.

Well... the next week we are over and his dad becons me into his inner sanctum. I'm a tad bit worried at this point. Then he proceeds to tell me his sob story about being more attracted to dudes and fullfills this problem by haveing a HUGE gay porn collection. And then he gives me this huge plastic bin filled with the stuff...

I'm still kind of confused on why this happened. Apparentnly he thought that's what gay guys do... trade porn or something. Well...I'm sure he was lonely and had no one who knew what it was like being mostly gay in a straight marriage. It was still really creepy. That and he was a hideous fat man. Ugh...

So I book it out of the house...
And my brother wonders why I'm nervous about strange invitations like this... weird stuff happens to me. [Smile]

1) I have accidentaly found snipits of porn around the house he lives in.

2) I went with him to the storage lockers last saturday so he could show me how much stuff he has, the size of the lockers, and to see if I could offer any advice onto how to organize it. We did some organizing and I did see some of it, and I think he didn't notice I saw it.

Be polite but firm.

"Uncle, I really would like to help you clean out the storage, but I noticed some ...(Magazines, books, videos, photo's, french postcards, whatever they were.). They make me feel uncomfortable. Could you remove them, or can I pitch it when I find it?

Honestly if it was me, I would take him up on the offer and toss all the porn I came across. What are the chances he'll confront you about throwing out his collection? And if he does you can just tell him you put all the garbage where it belonged. Let him know the location of the garbage bags and he can go fish it out if he wants to.
