Looking for fun ways for families to increase physical activity. There was dissent about the timing of playing tag. I thought I'd chek with all you non-partisan types.

If you are worried about whether the Tag is before or after dinner, you have already missed the point of Tag entirely.

didn't play much as a child - what's the point of tag? stimulate appetites? keep kids out from underfoot?

To the degree that tag HAS a point: laughing till you can't breathe, and lots of aerobic exercise.

All participants gather and deem a person "it." This "it," after giving everyone else several seconds to run away, must then proceed and try to touch, or tag, shall we, another person. If this does occur, then the person who was just tapped is now the new "it." The game continues until indefinately, or rather, until dinner is ready .
There are many varians to tag, including freeze tag, and whatever-it-was-called-whenever-you-have-to-go-underneath-the-frozen-persons-legs-to-unfreeze-them tag.
Oh, and the last person that's it loses

ahhhhhh! so it's a "keep kids out from underfoot while the adults cook" game!
I got it!
With aerobic activity as a side benefit!
Soooo, ummm, how do we get adults involved? What do parents like to do that's aerobic (besides that which made them parents in the first place?) that is fun for the whole family, doesn't cost a lot, is simple, and doesn't take up too much time?

What's more fun than playing tag with the kids is just TELLING them you'll play tag with the full intention of interpreting a "tag" as a "full force tackle."

We always had family football games, whenever we could. It was always so funny to see my uncle playing football in his suit and tie - he would be so excited to play after work that he wouldn't even change.
There's also bike riding.

I think hide and seek is a great game, although it does lack the aerobic activity. We used to lay hide and seek a lot as kids, runnning around the house trying to find eachother. In fact I still do play hide a seek with my friends, and I'm 19 years old. Oh well

We play a hybrid of kickball and tag, where it's me against the kids. I pitch the ball, they kick it and try to tag three bases before I nail 'em with the ball. My only handicap is that I have to throw the ball from where I picked it up.

I like playing tag with little kids (2-4) where I dodge instead of running away. I can usually play in a 15 foot square or so. Usually they stay in a pack and just all chase me. I can dodge them easily, and they scamper after me. Eventually, either by accident or because someone thinks of it, they split up anc catch me quickly. Then they all pile on top of me until I stand up with 4 kids hanging on to me. I stomp around like a monster, they laugh, then they scatter.

After dinner. Food in their bellies would slow them down just enough to give me a fighting chance to win.

"Got ya last" is a good variation of tag. When you are "it" when you tag someone you have to say "got ya last" or you are still it. We would play this in they house with my mom when we were teenagers. We would also play it on the trampoline. Good game for older kids. I would probably have the kids play tag before and after dinner. Have them out from under your feet while you are cooking and then after to wear them out.

I still play hide-and-seek sometimes with my friends. Outside...in the dark! It's fun, especially when you don't see them until they're right in front of you, and then they jump out at you.
