I have a computer based question which I'd be interested if anyone could answer.
When I'm using the internet and click on a link the new window is opening but nothing is appearing inside the window - I just get the timer even if I wait ages. I've waited around to see if it opens but after about 10 minutes gave up and shut down the window.
This has only recently started happening i.e. about a month ago now and it's always worked fine for years until then. We did load some new software for our new digital camera recently and also deleted some old obsolete stuff but it worked fine for several weeks after we did that.
It's annoying as hell though as I can't play any games and any links I want to check out on VBS or other sites I have to copy the shortcut and then paste in the address to get to it. This means I leave VBS if it isn't an internal link and then have to reopen it again. It also means I can't check stuff out if I'm in mid post or I loose all my work.
So can anyone suggest what might be wrong with my Computer/ Internet Explorer or whatever you think it might be.
Please help Frustrated Luddite

Cochick -- do you have a software/toolbar or anything installed that blocks pop-ups? They often treat secondary windows as a pop-up.
What version of Windows are you using? There is a dll registry thing I have run on the Windows XP machines here at work if that happens -- but I want to make sure it isn't some spyware or pop-up blocker first.

We have Windows ME & we use something called Zone Alarm Pro for firewall stuff - but it doesn't make a difference if the advert blocking is set to high or off the same thing happens - window still appears with the Windows world turning in the upper corner but with nothing else comes up.
I'm wondering if it's just that I need to get more memory for my computer?

My other query is whether anyone can recommend a good spam e-mail blocking programme. At present I receive hundreds (literally) of crap e-mails - many of them pornographic.

Turn off zone alarm completely and see what happens, they updated something a month ago that messed up a few online things for me. Just turn it off quickly for a couple minutes and try a few safe links.

Something like this happened to me this week, but it seems to have sorted itself out on it's own, leaving me to believe it was a problem with my DSL line....do you have DSL, cable, or dial-up?
Some of the programs that block spam/popups mees with your ability to see any other windows, even ones you ask to pop up...
Firefox and Exporer are now automatically blocking all pics/graphics on web pages....I have to click on them and click "view image" just to see them....even though I didn't change ANY settings regarding thayt.
Don't you just LOVE computers?

Kwea - My ad solution is Firefox, and the Adblock extension. I don't use any popup blockers because Firefox takes care of it. I don't use any Virus protection either because I usually will check what processes are running on my box, and know what runs at startup, as well as not downloading things that are suspicious. (I don't have to worry about stuff installing through activeX either because Firefox doesn't use ActiveX.) Cochick - I'd suggest clearing out your temporary internet files / windows temp files. Or switching to Firefox all together. I suspect you can get to those links because you can get to this page, however if you can't you can do this: 1. Click Start > Run... > Type in command press Enter. (Anyone else that is using Windows 2000 or XP type cmd, even though command will still work, its a better prompt.) 2. Type ftp ftp.mozilla.org press Enter, then proceed to login as anonymous, with your password being something resembling an email if you don't wish to use your email. 3. Type cd pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0/win32/en-US/ Enter then type binary Enter then type get "Firefox Setup 1.0.exe" Enter This will say 150 Opening connection Binary mode data connection for Firefox Setup 1.0.exe (4918270 bytes). Wait while it downloads, and then once it finishes. type quit Enter Then "Firefox Setup 1.0.exe" This will install firefox.
