I think a lot of members here would appreciate it if you would edit your title to not be in all-caps.

Nothing, but it does have something to do with forum etiquette.

Whooptie! Big deal.

That's like saying "The Weekly World News Shut Out of Pulitzer Nominations for 2004"

It's not a victory for the conservatives. It's just a small victory in deflating the ego of a filmmaker who has marginalized himself to the nth degree.

While posts written in all caps bug me, for some reason thread titles in all caps don't bother me at all.

There's also the fact that Fahrenheit 9/11, unlike Bowling For Columbine, was a really, really bad movie. The time I spent watching it are whole, entire minutes that are lost forever.

I think his problem was that instead of putting the thing in the documentary catagory where it belonged, he reached a little too far and submitted it into the best picture catagory as well as best director.

As a story, fiction or non-fiction, it simply could not stand up to the competition. It was only ever a documentary, and a questionable one at that.

And what was he saying by submitting himself as Best Director? As the director of a documentary, there were many responsibilities that he didn't have that directors of regular films do have. No comparison.

Maybe he should have submitted it for Best Editing instead...

Exactly. It would be a bigger deal if F 9-11 had been a good movie. Or at least a movie of any cinematic merit.

Wait a tick. The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre was nominated for score, makeup, and cinematography. None of which could possibly apply to Moore's Crapumentary. So, in effect, they were both shut out of the best picture nominations.

Looks like the Academy actually won this round. Or Dr. Claw. Or someone.

This is one of those fun instances where the standard bearers of conservativism show their silliness. Had 9/11 gotten any nominations, they would be frothing at the mouth, pointing to the nominations as an example of Hollywood's 'eliteness' or how it is out of touch with mainstream America (whatever that is), or some silly twaddle like that.

As it is, the spin must go in the opposite direction and lambast Moore, while totally ignoring Hollywood until it does something more agreeable to the message that the bearers need to get out.

I don't pay that much attention to Moore - I have my own problems with him. But someone mentioned on a show today that he brought part of this on himself.

Mainly, they claimed, because he didn't submit or promote the film for "best documentary." Not sure what his reasoning was, but they said (this was on NBC) he claimed it had nothing to do with upping his chances for a "best picture" nomination. [Roll Eyes]

Jay -- as a fellow conservative, I'm going to ask nicely.

Please edit the thread title to regular case instead of all caps -- just to be in line with forum etiquette. It isn't going to hurt you, or the meaning of what you are saying at all. It would just show that you are considerate of how others feel.

I think he was smacked down for his arrogance much more than his politics. If Mel Gibson had shown the slightest bit of award-whoring, Passion would probably have been shut out as well.

I don't think there's actually a rule about caps, but the thing is that:
1. it looks like shouting, and when you're shouting you don't look very disposed to hear what others have to say.
2. it's actually harder to recognize words in all caps than normal ones, so it's kind of tiring to read...

Oh, they're around, Jay. By the way, you're supposed to send everybody who replies to your thread ten bucks.

Edit: Twenty if they answer one of your questions

Well, yeah - it's just kind of an understood all-internet etiquette, not necessarily something written down.

And also, Jay, you have to really consider the importance. I mean if your thread was to announce:

WE JUST DECLARED WAR ON JAPAN
-- then I could see using all caps

But Academy Awards? Who here really cares much about their opinion anyway? [Wink]

You mean the academy didn't take Michael Moore seriously? I wonder what would have happened Pre-election, or if Kerry had been elected. Hmmmm...

I think it was $50 to respond to a topic.
After that I’ll be happy to send out your $20

I paid more attention last year to Academy Awards when “Return of the King” was up. I haven’t seen any of the nominees for Best Picture this year though….
And I don’t think that’s it’s that I need to get out more.
Even though it couldn’t hurt.
Not very many 30 something year old single women in WV!

Storm Saxon: as far as I know digging_holes is digging_holes and digging_holes alone. IRL, name is David, I think.

I am very glad F 9-11 didn't get anything. If it had, it would have merited a huge uproar.

When people abbreviate Farenheight 9-11 to F 9-11, I think they're talking about a fighter jet for a second, or maybe a car. [Roll Eyes]

I don't know how the line could be traced between Bowling for Columbine and Farenheight 9-11. BfC was a good documentary that did good documentary things. Michael Moore-style documentary things, but nonetheless. F9-11 was just very sensationalist and not very fun to watch. BfC was funny at times, while F9-11 wasn't. At all.

Actually, I do have about six other SNs on hatrack, but I would be very surprised if you knew me by any of them. The only one that I have used extensively is "dh", and everyone knew that that was me from the start, because it was my landmark avoidance SN and I made a thread about it.

And WheatPuppet, I agree with you completely.

F 9/11 was boring to an incredible degree, and essentially propaganda. Nominating conservative propaganda would offend Moore; why doesn't he see his manure the same way?

Stupid question, of course. Isn't arrogance fun?

The film wasn't nominated because Michael Moore did not submit the film for consideration.

See his explanation for why here

My understanding is that Michael Moore did not seek the "Best Documentary" award so that he could show F9-11 on television, but that he "lobbied hard" (I heard that phrase used this morning on CNN while I was getting ready for work) for the best picture/best director nominations.

"But, here's the bad news for Bush: Though 80% going IN to your movie are Kerry voters, 100% of those COMING OUT of your movie are Kerry voters. You can't come out of this movie and say, 'I am absolutely and enthusiastically voting for George W. Bush.'"

His findings are similar to those in other polls conducted around the country. In Pennsylvania, a Keystone poll showed that 4% of Kerry's support has come from people who decided to vote for him AFTER seeing "Fahrenheit 9/11" -- and in an election that will be very close, 4% is a landslide. A Harris poll found that 44% of Republicans who see the film give it a “positive” rating. Another poll, to be released this week, shows a 21-point shift in Bush's approval rating, after just one viewing of the movie, among audiences of undecideds who were shown "Fahrenheit 9/11" in Ohio.

My pollster friend told me that he believes if Kerry wins, "Fahrenheit 9/11" will be one of the top three reasons for his election. Kerry's only problem, he said, is how many people will actually be able to see it before election day. The less that see it, the better for Bush.

But 20 million people have already seen it -- and the Gallup poll said that 56% of the American public has seen or plans to see "Fahrenheit 9/11" either in the theater or on home video. The DVD and home video of our film, thanks to our distributors listening to our pleas to release it before November, will be in the stores on October 5. This is very good news.

Thanks Rabbit. I needed a good laugh!

And maui babe, you're right:

quote:
In the midst of the presidential campaign, Moore's announcement is a strategic move for his Oscar campaign. Documentaries and animated films have their own categories, but the conventional wisdom in Hollywood is that those niche awards can limit a film's appeal in the overall best picture class.

Moore said he and his producing partner, Harvey Weinstein, agreed "Fahrenheit 9/11" would stand a better chance if they focused solely on the top Oscar.

He also said he wanted to be "supportive of my teammates in nonfiction film."
