Okay, so I just finished Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. (Soap Opera featuring werewolves.) I've read all of Laurell K. Hamilton that I care to. (Extended Soap Opera featuring werewolves, vampires, et al.)

I need suggestions for more reading material in this genre, because my poor brain needs to be rehabilitated. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Thanks for your help.

Eve

By "genre," do you mean fantasy in general, or horror erotica?

Click on Vampires....

Barbra Hambly is fairly good at those, and are completely different if you want less sex....

In your books, of course. [Wink]

Fred Saberhagen, too, although I didn't like them as much.

So, bun Bun, are you saying you are into vampire porn? Well, that's certainly something for me to file away.

I liked Laurell K. Hamilton's earlier work, but man did she go over the top for me in the later work. I haven't even read her latest stuff.

Have you read the dark fantasy series by Jacqueline Carey? The first book in the trilogy is Kushiel's Dart.

There is way too much violent sex in there for me, but - there is so much more, that I was able to overlook my level of discomfort with the sexual content. It's not a book I'd want my daughter reading, but it's some damn fine writing.

Which brings me to a soapbox - why can't good writers write engaging, powerful stories without throwing in so much sex? To get away from graphic sex I normally have to read from the YA section, and hell even that isn't all that safe!

Now, In the Kushiel series I must admit that the sex is integral to the story - Phaedra is defined by sex. But in so many other stories it's just there for titillation, and that annoys me. It's almost a sign of weak writing to me - "Let's ensure the reader will keep reading by throwing in some really hot sex scenes! Because I'm not good enough to move the plot along any other way!"

okay, exit soapbox, stage right

Laurell K. Hamilton--boy, did that series go off the deep end. OMG.

Thank you guys all for your suggestions. For the record, I am not "into vampire porn" so much as "gossip of the undead," and the like.

Liz likes thinking other people are into porn. It's her way of living vicariously throught other's living vicariously through video.

Meta-vicarious, we call it.

What, like:
"Did you see the cloak she was wearing?"
"Oh, yeah! That was so 1343!"
"I just don't understand what Lord Deathstalker sees in her, honestly."
