Why not get it? Who knows when your dream bike will be available again at a reasonable price? If you're financially able to do it, why not? You only live once.

See, it's that financially able thing. I want to wait until my credit cards are completely paid off and I have the cash to hopefully buy it but at least put down 50% and finance the rest. (I will probably be at that spot in 6 months.) But it's there now, and my credit union would happily finance the whole thing for me, I'm pretty sure. But I really don't want to do that.

You say it's a good deal, but how good? Like is it a price you'd never find again, or one that will come up every six months or so. I've been watching prices for a couple of months. There are not many of this bike on the used market, so it's hard to make too much of a judgement on price. It's listed for $4400. New ones sell for $5600. I'd probably offer $3800 or so, assuming, of course, it really is in excellent condition like it says in the ad, and then if they seem flexible on the price but not that flexible say I really don't want to go over $4000.
And if I did finance it, I would still try to get it paid off sooner... I seriously doubt my company will pay bonuses this year, but we're not announcing until mid-February, when financials are closed for 4th quarter. If that happened, I'd be golden.
I think I'll wait at least until I do my taxes. I think I will have a refund that will at least bring me to debt-free, and if that's the case I'd be a lot more comfortable with financing this. And if it doesn't sell by then, they may be more willing to negotiate. If it does, it wasn't meant to be. (Debt-free except for my mortgage, of course.)

That is the financially responsible thing to do assuming that you'll be able to find the bike for a similar price when you are ready. Still, I admire your strength of will.

Pixiest, I know the risks. Would kinda suck not to buy a bike because I'm chicken, and then get in a car accident and not be able to ride one anyway, wouldn't it? Life is dangerous. You minimize the dangers you can, and then live your life.

Would the bike be just for enjoyment, or would it be useful in any way? Also, maybe this same bike isn't going anywhere fast. I mean, how big is the market for a purple motorcycle?

skrika03, it's actually a very popular color for motorcycles, particularly this model of bike, which is popular with women since it's low to the ground. And what to you mean by "useful?" It is a mode of transportation. No, I don't particularly need it, I have a truck. I couldn't use it in the winter. In the summer, it will have better gas milage then my truck by quite a bit, but the primary reason I will be buying it is because I think it's fun.
m_p_h, in principle I agree with you. But there are degrees... I don't have a car payment, my mortgage is less than most of my friends' rent... I'm in pretty good shape. And if it's a choice between getting the exact bike I want and paying finance charges on it for 6 months or so until I can retire the debt or not being able to find the bike when I have the money, I don't think getting the loan is an unreasonable choice. It's not just that I want it now, it's winter, I couldn't ride it for probably three months anyway.

Wind at 55 miles/hour is a lot colder than wind at 15 miles/hour. But if it wasn't for the fact that it's better for the bike to store it, I would probably still ride it on nice days.

So, I looked at my $ last night, and realized I had more squirreled away then I really thought. Enough that I could have comfortably paid half the bike in cash and financed the other half.
So I checked the paper to see if it was still there before moseying over to the credit union to get information on signature loans... and it wasn't.
Just as well. Now I'll get my taxes done, everything cleaned up, and make sure I have a comfortable cash reserve for emergencies. You know, unless another one shows up in the meantime.

As warmer weather approaches, prices may rise a bit. However...buying a motorcycle now with the weather so cold is just going to be a serious bummer. You'll get to stare at it longingly, but not really ride it much (if at all). How sad is that.
Besides, I think you had the right idea on this purchase -- it's not a necessity, but something that you really would enjoy. It should be the kind of thing you buy when you are certain that you don't need the money elsewhere. And financing it is okay, but buying it outright with cash you've saved is much better.
There will be others. One will end up as yours. Nice thing about Yamahas is that there are a lot of them and they are very reliable. It should be possible to find a good condition used one pretty much any time you decide you're ready.
