I just purchased a cheap surge protector for my home computer, but now I'm wondering if it was the right one.

It is rated at about 1000 joules. Is this big enough, or should I spend a few extra bucks and get one rated at 2000 joules, or even 3000?

What's your opinion?

Just as long as this thread doesn't turn into a... "my surge protector is bigger" thread.

It would probably depend on what all you run within your house that will connected to it. Powertools? Million dollar high-tech servers and other fancy computer stuffs? 28 air compressors?

This goes into a lot of detail: http://www.hometoys.com/htinews/oct02/articles/benton/benton.htm
You should be fine. If you really want to spend some cash get one with a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) on it. They aren’t to bad really. Makes it really nice for those stormy nights when the power goes out. Doesn’t last forever of course, but you don’t loose everything or get booted if the power goes out for a minute.

Thanks, Icarus. I was hoping to get some interest from the title. [Smile]

Right now the power strip is only used to power the computer, the monitor, the printer/fax, and an electric screwdriver (I couldn't find any place else to put it [Smile] ). So not much power.

So you think 1000 joules is sufficient, Jay? That site is a bit more technical than I'm looking for right now.

Well, 1000 jouls is like lifting a ton(/ne?) a meter high every second.

Wow...I honestly didn't know what to expect when I opened this. [Smile] All I have to say, is that no matter what they told you, bigger is better, as long as it fits where you need to use it.

I have no idea what the "Joules rating" is on mine. I just know I like it. It's a 6 plug, battery packup, APC surge protector. It has connections for ethernet cable and phone line. It will also auto shutdown your computer upon a loss of power when the battery is low. [Big Grin] However, that last bit requires a program. The disk that came with was for windows 95(8?)...who cares, it wouldn't work on my computer.

So....10' up in a tree, huh?
